⚾ 🥎 ⚾ Alabama @ #12 Southern Miss: USM beats Bama 14-4 in 8 innings.

In May of last year Bama set a program record finishing the season undefeated in mid-week games: 13-0. Last week they pushed that record to 15-0.

And tonight...going for another against one of the best teams in the nation; on the road.

Blackwood had a good outing the last time ...

Tonight's game should have an SEC matchup feel to it. Bama beat USM in Tuscaloosa last season during a midweeker, but then USM got the last laugh and beat UA in a very close game to eliminate them from the Hattiesburg regional. The Golden Eagles are coming into this one hot, having won 6 in a row, including a win last weekend over a good Oregon State squad. USM is starting freshman Dylan Causey on the mound... his first collegiate start (he's appeared in 3 games this season... 2 IP, 0 ER). Neither team comes into this one with very hot bats... Bama is dead last in the SEC in BA. If USM was in the SEC, they'd be 2nd to last.

On Bama specifically... after I mentioned a week ago that Jason Torres was maybe looking like he'd turned the corner at the plate, he's reverted back to 2025 Jason Torres (which is a bad thing). Bad for him and bad for the UA lineup, because Vaughn is unlikely to sit him if history is any indication of his intentions. This Bama squad really needs a couple of the vets to get going with the bat and they also need Sam Chritiansen and Logen Davenport to heal up and get healthy ASAP.

Well, the Golden Eagles found their bats. Currently up 12-4, top 5th. 2 GSHR's on the evening for USM. One issue Bama hasn't had yet this season is the pitching staff walking a lot of batters. Well, they can check that one off the list. They've (4 different pitchers) given up 6 walks in 4 innings, 5 of which scored.

Mercifully, this one is over. USM wins 14-4 via run rule in 8 innings. The game ended on a throwing error by Bama, which pretty much sums up the game for UA. This team has a lot to figure out and a short runway to do it at this point (before the unforgiving SEC slate begins).

Georgia Tech got beat by Georgia State tonight. These tend to happen.

They happen all the time... Arkansas St beat Arkansas. McNeese beat LSU. My issue with the Bama right now isn't them losing to a better team, it's the fact they are fiddle fucking around too much. It's about how they played, tonight, and leading up to tonight, that concerns me. This was a game that I know Vaughn has had circled since getting ousted from the Regionals last year, and they showed up flat and bumfuzzled. This, after a less than stellar string of performances to begin the season.
