🏈 Barrett Jones may turn out to be the best at 'Bama... ever

I have such respect for what this kid has done & if 'Bama wins the SEC & plays for the NC game, he will be the best ever in my book. I think if they get that far he should win the Heisman too, Orlando Pace has nothing on this kid.

At this stage of the season, we know not to get too far down the road into the season, but I just wanted to be the first to say it about him.

With the success Barrett has had at Alabama, he could very well be the most decorated offensive lineman of all time depending on how this season plays out. If Coach Saban says that he is one of the finest he has ever been around in the game of football, he's got my vote!

I respect John Hannah also, but he played Guard right? Jones has played Tackle, Guard, and now Center and at high levels of praise. I'd say he's probably one of Bama's best all time lineman, certainly the most versatile.

Hannah played guard and tackle.

There's a problem when it comes to saying how good players are, have been, and where they are listed all time. I'm not talking about different era's of football, I'm talking about how they are judged. This is a prime example.

John Hannah was selected as an All-American twice during his time at Bama. Barrett has the same. Hannah played from 1970 through 1972 and in those three seasons he was part of an SEC Championship team. Barrett has that, plus two National title rings as well.

When you compare college careers to college careers, Barrett has the hardward edge by a large margin.

Now, Coach Bryant called Hannah the best offensive lineman he's ever coached. That praise alone puts him above the majority of great lineman we've had in Tuscaloosa.

BUT, here's the kicker...

When people talk about players coming from Alabama they often mix their time in college with their time in the pro's. Hannah was in the pro bowl nine times. He was talked about in the league for a decade after he left Bama and because of that exposure people consider him to be the best of all time.

For his career? Possibly. In college?

Just to add another twist here. There are many who don't feel Barrett is the best lineman we have.

Already graduated, has a stellar GPA and working on his masters, not to mention Barrett Jones the humanitarian - say what you want about Barrett on the field, what he does off the field is far more impressive to me :)

Hannah is w/o a doubt the gold standard for offensive lineman, not just for 'Bama but for all. I don't think we'll get much debate on that.

I think to some degree, the hardware collected means something, but sometimes that can be based on the rest of the competition. Certainly, Jones has the lead.

My thoughts about this thread are simply giving props to the young man & the simple point of fact that his contribution to this teams success both on & off the field are almost unparallelled... especially if they win another championship. His grades, his athletic contributions, his off the field missions, & thus his overall leadership may very well place him in the position as the best ambassador this school, ever. We have a long season ahead of us but I think he is on the way.

As far as athleticism, sure there may be some better lineman in that category now. However, that doesn't necessarily happen to translate on the field. Just look at Andre Smith, he is a prime example of waste. I certainly don't think we have other guys on this team like him but it does illustrate how talent doesn't equate to success.

I'd say will be the most versatile, and probably most decorated. In terms of best on the field? Most valuable can sometimes get confused with best I think. He is by far our most valuable. If you asked NFL scouts who was our best? Warmack would have him beat pretty easily at this point.

Whether he is the best, most valuable, or what ever, he is with out a doubt one of my favorite Bama players of all time.

Hannah played guard and tackle.
See I didn't know that. I only remember him as a Guard in the NFL.

I agree, the greatest all time is an iffy subject. The era's are different, scheme's are different, and too many old timers hold onto he belief the guys they saw growing up are better than the ones the younger fans are seeing now. And the younger fans have no appreciation for the old players. I'm 40 so I know I'm not in the younger fans club, maybe the middle. LOL

Now, Coach Bryant called Hannah the best offensive lineman he's ever coached. That praise alone puts him above the majority of great lineman we've had in Tuscaloosa.

Coach Bryant didn't coach Jones. While the statement does give a lot of merit to Hannah, it's possible the same could have been said about many lineman going forward after Bryant. Coach Bryant once said Namath was the greatest athlete or something like that right? What do you think a Coach Bryant would have said about a Trent Richardson, a Julio Jones, Derrick Thomas, Cornelius Bennett, or David Palmer? Too many people sit on what Coach Bryant said as biblical. I love and appreciate Coach Bryant for all he did. He was there when I attended my first games in 1978 and I always watched him up until his retirement. But I'm not one of those Bama fans. Flame away, cause I know that's gonna rub some people wrong. LOL

Maybe the most versatile offensive lineman ever but he's not THE best at his position. Hannah was considered THE best at his position. Barret will be up there when its all said and done but I couldn't put him in front of Derrick Thomas, John Hannah, etc.. The usual great names

What Terry said.

Considering Hannah is on the NFL all time team, Barrett has a ways to go. Barrett is an enormously good person, and uncanny as to his ability to play multiple positions very well.

It is very tricky to compare players from different eras and different tstyles of play. I would rank Dwight Stephenson as our best center ever. He was great on Bryant's wishbobe teams, equally great in the NFL with the Dolphins. John Hannah was a great tackle on Bryant's wishbone teams, then became possibly the best pulling guard ever anywhere in a long NFL career with the Patriots. You'd have to say John is a high character guy as well. He gave his NFL signing bonus to John Croyle to help him start The Big Oak Ranch. Barrett Jones is one of my favorite bama players ever. But so were Hannah and Stevenson in their careers. One of those things that makes you proud to be a Bama fan.
