just curious what their record is in games that have decided the NC.

I know there was a time when the championships were given before bowl games, with BAMA even losing some of those bowl games after being awarded the NC, (hence the continuous debate over total NC).

so I guess the question only applies to the games that they knew going in, that the winner would be the NC.

Got time and here is what I have found.

1971 Neb #1 vs Bama #2 lost 38-6 Orange Bowl

1979 Penn St #1 vs Bama #2 won 14-7 Sugar Bowl

1992 Miami #1 vs Bama #2 won 34-13 Sugar Bowl

2009 Bama #1 vs Texas #2 won 37-21 Rose Bowl

thanks Rick. 3 and 1 aint too shabby, but it brings up other questions though.

So did they stop awarding NCs before bowls in the late 60s?

Was the 73 and 78 NC only awarded by the AP and the bowl outcome not matter?

The answer highlights why I didn't answer or spend extra time researching the question. Technically, you asked what Bama's record was when playing in a deciding game. The '90 Sugar Bowl decided the 1989 season championship when Miami beat Bama. I was at the game. It was not a 1 vs 2 matchup even though the winner won the mythical title. There might be more instances, hence the difficulty in arriving at an accurate answer.

The situation regarding bowls has gone back and forth. In 1964 we were #1 going into the Orange bowl, and one of the major polls awarded its nc before the bowls. After we lost in the bowl game they changed their approach the next year to wait until after the bowl game , and of course everyone ahead of us got beat in the bowls, so we were #1 again. We paid for that when our 1966 team, easily the best of the three, was voted #3 behind ND and Mich State.

That's another good set of examples. Back to the Miami game, if Bama had won the Sugar Bowl that year, they would not have been the number one team. So in one sense, that was not a title game for Bama but it was for Miami.

thats why I asked this...."so I guess the question only applies to the games that they knew going in, that the winner would be the NC."

I do appreciate the input guys..it is narrowing it down alot

Did your mama find your easter eggs for you or did you hunt 'em?

ok, like I am the only person that has ever, oh my goodness, asked a question.
thats what forums are for.

as much useless crap that gets discussed here, figured this was harmless, plus I figured someone such as yourself, a person that seemingly knows EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING, you would have been the first to give an opinion :bow:
