I just sat down and did some research on how Alabama has performed against Tennessee when Bama comes into the game ranked in the Top 5. Bama is 16-1-1 all time in that situation. The only time the Vols have defeated a Top 5 ranked Bama team was in 1982. They tied them in 1993, 17-17 in Birmingham.

The last time the Tide came in ranked in the Top 5, was in 2005. Bama won that game 6-3. Marking the ONLY TIME Bama has ever played Tennessee in Tuscaloosa when the Tide was ranked in the Top 5...of course, Birmingham was Alabama's "home" against the Vols for many years before.

29 times Alabama has entered the Tennessee game with an unbeaten and untied record. We are 18-9-2 in these games. A Tennessee team with a losing record (they are presently 3-4) has never defeated an unbeaten UA team, although in 1936 a 1-2 Tennessee squad played a 3-0 Tide to a 0-0 tie. Actually, unless I'm missing something, that's the only previous time that UA has entered the game undefeated/untied while UT entered it with a losing record.

I was wondering about that very thing myself but too lazy to do the book work. Thanks for those numbers!

BTW, in 1986, Bama was 6-0 and ranked #2 going into their game against Tennessee in Knoxville. The Tide went on to put a whuppin' on the Vols that day to improve to 7-0 before their season headed south.

The Crimson Tide suffered some big disappointments in what could have been a national championship contending season. Penn St. destroyed the Tide 23-3 in Tuscaloosa on its way to the national championship. A 10-14 loss to the eventual SEC champions LSU seemed to take the wind out of the sails as did a 17-21 loss to Auburn.

But the Crimson Tide went out on a high note in the Sun Bowl pounding Washington 28-6 to finish the '86 season at 10-3.

Let's hope history repeats itself in Knoxville as another undefeated, second-ranked Bama team invades Neyland Stadium. Then after today's victory for the Tide, Alabama can then focus on redefining history from tha point on.

RTR!

I'd love to see a game like '86. IE: rushing yards by the team.

Certainly woudn't like the outcome of that season though. Sounds just like 05', besides the Penn St. game.
