Scouting Alabama

  • Alabama continues conference play this weekend with its final SEC road series of the season at Texas A&M
  • The Crimson Tide is 38-6 overall and 13-5 in conference play, most recently posting a series sweep at home against Mississippi State before taking both games of a midweek doubleheader against UNA and Alcorn State
  • Alabama has won five of its six SEC series this season, including two sweeps
  • The Tide leads the league in SEC play with 140 hits, with Kaylee Tow and Ashley Prange both inside the top five individual rankings with 19 each
  • Montana Fouts leads the SEC with 105 strikeouts in conference play, more than the next two leading pitchers combined
  • Head Coach Patrick Murphy is in his 24th season as head coach at Alabama with a 1,187-326 (.785) record
  • Alabama returns 11 players from last year's team that made the Women's College World Series semifinals, including a pair of All-Americans in Montana Fouts and Kaylee Tow
  • The Tide welcomes nine newcomers, including three transfers and six freshmen

After 5 A&M leading 6-4. They lit up Fouts bottom of the inning. Interesting A&M is now using their 3rd pitcher of the game and Murph sticking with Fouts. I know she has gotten out of many, many, jams but when you have been around 4 years and all you have is drop, rise, and power teams eventually catch on.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Alabama softball fell in Friday's series opener to Texas A&M, 6-4.

Alabama (38-7, 13-6 SEC) overcame an early Texas A&M (25-17, 4-12 SEC) lead, scoring four runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead but the Aggies responded with five unanswered down the stretch to earn the upset victory. Ashley Prange and Jenna Lord each had two-hit days batting at the top of the order, as did Megan Bloodworth in the six-hole. Bloodworth and Kaylee Tow each drove in two RBIs on back-to-back hits in the third. Montana Fouts (19-5) took the loss in the compete-game effort.

A solo home run from Makinzy Herzog in the first inning gave Texas A&M the first lead of the game. With two on and two out in the top of the third, an Aggie fielding error extended the inning and loaded the bases for Alabama. Tow took advantage, dropping a single down the left-field line to drive in two and give the Tide the lead. Bloodworth tacked on two more with another two-run single in the next at-bat to make it 4-1. With two on and two out in the bottom of the third, a fielding error allowed two runners to come home for Texas A&M and cut Alabama's lead to one.

With two on and two out for the Aggies in the bottom of the fifth, a double in the gap drove in both runners and gave the home team a 5-4 lead. An RBI single in the next at-bat made it 6-4 before a flyout ended the inning. Alabama had two in scoring position to lead off the sixth but was unable to cut into the deficit. A two-out intentional walk in the bottom half loaded the bases for Texas A&M but a strikeout from Fouts ended the fame with the score still 6-4 heading to the seventh inning. A one-out double from Lord in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate but a pair of groundouts ended the rally and the game as Texas A&M took the series opener.

Highlights

  • Alabama has out-hit its opponent 32 times this season, with tonight as just its third loss when doing so
  • The Tide is now 9-3 this season when the opponent scores first
  • The multi-hit games were the ninth for Ashley Prange, sixth for Megan Bloodworth and fifth for Jenna Lord
  • Bloodworth extended her hitting streak to a season-high six games
  • Prange extended her reached-base streak to 20 games, the longest for any Tide player this season

Still in the bottom of the 2nd. A&M up 7-0 with 1 out. Dang! Bama making one of the worse teams in the SEC look like world beaters. Lexi pitched almost 50 pitches in the bottom of the 2nd. This is UGLY…UGLY…UGLY

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Alabama softball couldn't dig itself out of a big second-inning deficit, ultimately falling 9-1 in five innings to Texas A&M as the Aggies clinched the weekend series.

Alabama (38-8, 13-7 SEC) faced a big early deficit as Texas A&M (26-17, 5-12 SEC) put up a seven-spot in the second inning and then added an eighth run in the fourth inning to set up a potential run-rule victory. Down to its final out in the top of the fifth, Jenna Lord kept the game going for the Crimson Tide with an RBI single to make it 8-1 but the Aggies ended it in the bottom half with a single and fielding error to make it 9-1.

Alabama put two in scoring position with two out in the first but a strikeout ended the inning prevented the Tide from scratching a run across in the opening inning. A single and two walks in the bottom of the third loaded the bases for Texas A&M and a single through the right side drove in a pair to give the home team the first lead of the game. Another pair of RBI singles stretched it to 4-0 before a three-run home run made it 7-0.

The Aggies stretched the lead to eight in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double, meaning Alabama needed to score a run in the top of the fifth to avoid the run-rule loss. With two out and a runner at third, Lord poked a single through the right side to erase the shutout and keep the game going. With two out in the bottom of the fifth a walk, single and fielding error plate the game-winning run for Texas A&M, with the final score at 9-1.

Highlights

  • The series loss is the first for Alabama against Texas A&M, winning the previous six against the Aggies (2013, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21)
  • It is just the second time this season the Tide has lost back-to-back games, previously doing so in a March 12 doubleheader at LSU
  • Megan Bloodworth's hit streak ended at a season-high six games and Ashley Prange's reached-base streak ended at a career-high 20 games

Scoring Summary

  • B2 | A bases-loaded single through the right side drove in two (0-2, 1 Out)
  • B2 | An RBI single to left drove in a run for the Aggies (0-3, 1 Out)
  • B2 | An infield single brought another run home for Texas A&M (0-4, 1 Out)
  • B2 | Morgan Smith hit a three-run home run (0-7, 1 Out)

So glad I had to bush hog at the farm this weekend in Valley Alabama . I been coming home about 9:30 pm. and checking our website to see what happened in the game and if I need to pull it up on ESPN and watch replay.

Thank y’all for saving me from gripping for 5 innings or longer.
