Good read. One interesting point I hadn't noticed:

Somewhat shockingly considering the depth of the roster and three injuries to important players, Alabama's participation chart only shows 35 players seeing the field in the entire game. By contrast, Ole Miss put a more normal 58 players on the field. I wouldn't rule this out as the reason that Alabama clearly lost the 4th quarter, despite holding the ball for 75 plays to the Rebel Ackbars' Black Bears (hence "RBBs") 63.

i have often wondered why we don't play more players considering the number of 5 and 4-star recruits we sign every year. i realize on defense, it takes a while to learn Saban's system, but given today's "dumbed-down" HUNH offenses, why not simplify the defensive schemes and put your athletes on the field to make instinctive plays?? i realize control freaks like Saban don't like to "let go," but it seems we need a simpler defensive approach. this would also help minimize the "knowledge deficit" caused by regularly losing players to the NFL. put more emphasis on athleticism and less on scheme.

I think it is a toss up... but for CNS defense to be what we normally see, it needs to have at least one veteran on the team who has the ability & where with all to know what he is doing. Depriest is not that guy.

The 2011 D had several. Barron, Upshaw, Hightower, in the very least. Arguably Mosely & Harris (who finally figured it out his senior year). We just don't have it now & I cannot think of a single player who couldn't use another year. If that happens I see 2015 setting up very similarly to 2011.

I believe it's wrong. My logic meter made me question this stat, so I took a few minutes to check and I believe we played a bunch more guys. Bozeman's not on the list, and he replaced Kelly. Rashaan Evans (32), Dillon Lee (25), ArDarius Stewart (13) and Tim Williams (56) are all in the main screen of the opening kickoff and they aren't on the participation list. Go to the 8 minute mark of the video. The list only shows us playing two extra D-linemen (Brandon Ivory and Pettway). No way that's right, either.

EDIT: Reuben Foster (10) and Tenpenny (28) both on KO return, and Lee (25) was on Ole Miss' FG attempt as well.

RTR,

Tim

Not good if this correct. I realize some players play on a lot of different teams but if you take the starting offense and defense you have 22, throwing in 2 other RB, another TE, a punter, kickoff man, long snapper and an extra center that brings us to a total of 29 not counting any other special team players. I would think more than 6 other players saw action in the game. 35 is very low at this level.

@It Takes Eleven, I wondered about the participation numbers as you and finally found where his numbers came from: RollTide.com charts. Here's what they have:

Something else Ole Miss did better than us. Notice the difference in the Ole Miss Stats:
