Nick Saban hinted on Wednesday that Alabama will "probably" add another quarterback before the start of the season. That may now be close to happening.

The Crimson Tide is pursuing East Carolina graduate transfer quarterback Gardner Minshew, according to sources.

Minshew is expected to visit Alabama at some point soon, per sources.

The Brandon, Mississippi native was set to enter the spring as East Carolina's No. 1 quarterback but left the program in late January.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Minshew played in 10 games as a junior last season, started five and threw for 2,140 yards and 16 touchdowns with seven interceptions.

Minshew threw for 1,486 yards and 10 touchdowns over the team's final four games. During that stretch, he had two games with more than 440 yards and another with 351 yards.

Minshew led Northwest Mississippi Community College to a national championship in 2015.

Alabama didn't sign a quarterback in this year's recruiting class, so there are only three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster -- Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones.

Hmm Interesting stuff Birdman. I'm assuming this would be a scholarship QB?

IMO this would be completely based on the proposition of one of our QB's transferring post Spring (including Mac Jones). Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense.

The bigger question is why would a kid who's going to start somewhere transfer in to UA where he would instantly be a third stringer? At best a second stringer if Jalen/Tua were to transfer. I guess a ring is a big motivation! We'll see what happens.

Not sure what the value is with a graduate transfer, especially if he only has one year of eligibility. Sure, Alabama has some good graduate school options, and the kid might get a ring, but his odds of playing are slim - especially if he doesn't get here till Summer.

Saban wanted to sign a QB and when asked about it he teased that they may be looking to bring in a "veteran QB somehow." I think its just depth, plain and simple.

When I hear the term graduate transfer, my mind immediately goes to what's in it for him. His clippings say he was in line to be the starting QB, every other story I'm familiar with in the SEC is about transfers going to a ready-made situation for them to start. Unless this ends up being a story about a kid deeply involved in postgraduate study, what's in it for him?

In 2015 he was in JUCO in Mississippi. The team he was playing for won the NJACC NC. A ring in JUCO and FBS has a nice look for one. Oh, forgot. As a SR in HS that team won a title.

There's some interesting phrasing in his bio at ECU. "An integral part" and "played a key role." (Started last year in JUCO.) A real late signee at ECU as well. I can see all three, well four, QB's in fall camp. I'm not saying that'll happen. I am saying it's a unique mix of personalities on the QB depth chart.

He'd be a great addition for a scout team QB when they're prepping for up-tempo offenses.

Gardner Minshew withdraws from ECU to devote attention to family

ECU Athletics Communications contributed to this report.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - ECU senior starting quarterback Gardner Minshew has officially withdrawn from school to devote his full attention to a family matter in his home state of Mississippi, head coach Scottie Montgomeryannounced late Tuesday afternoon.

The news come as a shock, given there was no recent indication that Minshew was thinking about stepping away. But clearly something of concern has arisen within Minshew's family, leading to the departure. Since Minshew has already graduated, he could return to the program for the summer or fall and still be eligible to play.

“Our full support is for Gardner and his family during this time,” Montgomery said. “He's been an asset and leader in our program, but our first priority is to be there for him today, tomorrow and the days afterward. The door will certainly remain open for his return to ECU, and when it's appropriate for us to talk about football again, we will do so.”

Minshew, who earned a bachelor's degree in communication after the fall semester, was designated by Montgomery as the Pirates' starting quarterback heading into spring drills later this month. With Minshew out, sophomore Reid Herring, redshirt freshman Kingsley Ifedi and true freshman Holton Ahlers will see the repetitions in spring ball.

The Brandon, Miss. native started five of 10 games during the 2017 season. He led ECU in completions (174), attempts (304), passing yards (2,140) and passing touchdowns (16) as a junior. Minshew established school and American Athletic Conference single-game records with a 52-of-68, 463-yard performance at Houston on Nov. 4.

After leading Northwest Mississippi Community College to the 2015 NJCAA National Championship, Minshew transferred to ECU and played in seven games during the 2016 campaign as a sophomore.

I found this looking him up?

I think the value is simply adding a 4th QB to the roster. Doubt he gets any playing time AT ALL. Maybe, he is looking at getting closer to his hometown of Brandon, MS and has aspirations of becoming a coach. What better place to learn than from the GOAT?
