It Takes Eleven

Quoth the Raven...
Staff
Hey y'all,

As I mentioned earlier, I spoke with Georgia DOT early last week and found out that there will be construction work in the downtown/midtown area over Labor day. I got this in my work email while I was away for a few days.

The summary is below, followed by the full text of the press release. The way it looks to me, someone coming down 75 or 85 South (Chattanooga/Clemson directions) will be obliterated without taking an alternate route. You MAY be okay getting on the Connector North from I-20 (B'ham), but I'd still recommend jumping off 20 a few exits early and taking surface streets the dome. I'll follow up with alternate routes later.

RTR,

Tim

LABOR DAY WEEKEND - MAJOR LANE CLOSURES AT THE I-75/85 SOUTHBOUND MERGE (BROOKWOOD INTERCHANGE) – EXPECT EXTREME DELAYS

9 pm Fri. Aug. 29 – 5 am Tues. Sept. 2:
- I-85 southbound will be reduced to two lanes near the I-75 merge
- I-75 southbound will be reduced to one lane at the I-85 merge

This work will cause EXTREME SOUTHBOUND DELAYS in Midtown and Downtown Atlanta, and on both I-85 and I-75 southbound nearing the work zone. Motorists attending Downtown events are strongly urged to use MARTA. Drivers traveling to areas outside of Atlanta should use I-285 and go around the city. For more information, see the attached media release.

Lane Closures Will Bottleneck I-75/I-85 SB Labor Day Weekend; GDOT Advises Visitors Take MARTA or Perimeter into Downtown Atlanta

ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising of a major Interstate reconstruction project where I-85 south meets I-75 south on Labor Day Weekend. This construction will cause heavy delays in Midtown and Downtown Atlanta. Motorists traveling into the city for events are strongly urged to use MARTA and avoid this construction zone. Drivers traveling to areas outside Atlanta should use
I-285.

Beginning at 9 p.m., Friday, August 29:
• I-85 southbound will be reduced to two lanes near its merge with I-75, and
• I-75 southbound will be reduced to one lane at this merge.

This work will continue until 5 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2. Extremely heavy congestion is anticipated on both I-85 and I-75 SB north of and through downtown Atlanta.

“Throughout the holiday weekend, motorists should expect extreme congestion on the Connector southbound, delays that easily could extend two or more hours. And I expect this back-up will stretch far back on I-75 and I-85 as well,” said Metro Atlanta District Engineer Bryant Poole.

During the three-day Labor Day Weekend crews will tear out and rebuild sections of I-85 and I-75/I-85. The work will improve safety, sight distance and shift vehicle alignment into the final configuration for access onto the still-to-be-constructed 10th Street exit ramp. The new alignment also will provide a staging area to remove the east side of the 14th Street Bridge and rebuild the center bridge supports.

The Department weighed the decision to work Labor Day Weekend very carefully. The complexity and amount of work to be completed would require up to six weekends of major lane closures to accomplish what could otherwise be finished over a three-day weekend.

“We recognize we are inconveniencing the traveling public over a major holiday weekend as well as those planning to attend events at the World Congress Center and Georgia Dome,” said Poole, citing the University of Alabama vs. Clemson University football game on August 30 and a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Marching Bands competition September 1. “However when we looked at the venue schedule for the rest of September and early October there were even more people impacted – what with Georgia Tech and Falcons football and the Braves season ongoing through, as well as other events.”

The lane closures are part of an $88.5 million reconstruction project at 14th Street in Midtown which began in spring 2007 and is expected to be completed in spring 2010. The bridge replacement project also features two new exit ramps from the Connector; southbound to 10th Street and northbound to 17th Street.

Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org.

I thought they suspended work on holiday weekends in the past! OH well I guess I will take my trust back roads thru the ghetto!!

There is an easy way if you are coming from the Cobb Co area, take 285 to South Cobb drive and head south, it comes out near the dome, not the nicest neighborhoods but if you know the area or can read a map you will be ok.

ATLANTA GAMEDAY TRAFFIC

i wanna help clear this thing up. the article has been floating around about all the work they will be doing in atlanta. the work will be north of atlanta where 85 and 75 come together. with that said, if you are staying in buckhead or midtown, this will affect you. you need to do one of two things, move your reservation to the south side or plan to ride the marta. now i dont work for gdot, but i have commen sense. when they say traffic will be backed up for 2 hours, they mean traffic probaly wont move all day lol. bama fans please think about this before committing to northside reservations.

When are they expecting traffic to start getting bad? I am coming over Friday, so it sounds liek I better get through there before lunch? or at least well before 3?

Traffic on a holiday weekend starts well before 3. Seriously. The volume will start building anytime after noon. As long as you get here by 2:00 you should avoid the brunt of it. If you're running late no biggie just be patient. If you were coming in Saturday at 3 that would be a different story. :)

The actual construction technically starts Friday at 9 p.m. I believe.

Just keep *DOT on your cell handy if you have any difficulty.

This is about the dumbest crap I have ever heard of. Why would you do a major construction project on Labor Day weekend? I will be leaving Friday at 6 so I am sure I will be dealing with major traffic issues.

If you are coming from Daphne, you will have no issues at all, other than normal heavy Atlanta traffic. The traffic back ups will involve SOUTH bound traffic NORTH of the Georgia Dome.

Will I get caught in this traffic? I am coming up really early Saturday morning from Tuscaloosa through Birmingham. I am staying at Canterbury Inn and Suites about 1/2 mile south of the dome.

I will be coming from Birmingham and staying in Duluth, GA Friday night. I am staying there because it is free. Saturday night I will be staying at the Hammonds Dr. Holiday Inn. I just know it's close to the train. I probably screwed up the reservations.

You should have only normal traffic delays,if any, to Duluth and then to the Holiday Inn. Dunwoody Marta station is one mile from the Holiday Inn. Park there and take South line to 5 Points station. Transfer to West line and get off at Georgia Dome station. After the game, take the East line back to 5 Points and transfer to the CORRECT North line. There are two of them and you want to end up in Dunwoody and not Doraville.

Here's an update and some alternatives for y'all:

DOWNTOWN ATLANTA: AVOID I-75/85 SOUTHBOUND LABOR DAY WEEKEND
9 pm Fri. Aug. 29 - 5 am Tues. Sept. 2: Major lane closures are scheduled at the I-75/85 southbound merge (Brookwood Interchange) this Labor Day Weekend:

- I-85 southbound: Reduced to 2 lanes at the I-75 merge (just south of the Peachtree St overpass)
- I-75 southbound: Reduced to 1 lane at the I-85 merge (just south of the 16th St exit)

This work will cause EXTREME SOUTHBOUND DELAYS approaching Midtown and Downtown Atlanta on both I-85 and I-75 southbound. Motorists attending Downtown events are strongly urged to use MARTA or take I-285 to I-20 from either the west or east. Drivers traveling through Atlanta should use also I-285 and go around the city.

Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to bad weather. Callers can also reach live operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org. Georgia 511 – we’ll get you there.

Everyone - Do not underestimate the rubbernecking ability of northbound connector drivers. If you're headed north on the connector to the normal GA Dome exit, call 511 first and make sure northbound is not affected. In normal traffic times, wrecks on the northbound "Grady Curve - 10th Street" section of the connector (the portion from I20 to the 75/85 split) are very common, and they can really gum things up.

Coming from Bham - If you want to merge onto 75/85 North from I20 AND there's no northbound congestion, that's fine. If you call 511 and there are problems, avoid it. If I20 itself is not congested but you want to avoid 75/85 North, I'd recommend exit 55a, merge to Oak, left on Whitehall/Peters and then a quick left to Chapel Street. Chapel immediately turns into Northside Drive, and that's a straight shot to the Dome. Google/Mapquest it, and you'll see all of those turns are within 150 yard or so of the interstate

OR

If you want to exit I20 even closer in, take Exit 57, turn left on Windsor/Spring Street and follow Spring to Marietta Street and turn left, then go two blocks on Marietta and turn left on Andrew Young International Blvd. You'll looking at Phillips Arena/GA Dome. This is the route Google maps defaults to when driving from Bham to the GA Dome.

I'm not familiar with parking, but there are official and private options that will probably run you in the $20 to $30 range.

Be safe everyone. There is a huge crackdown underway on drunk driving this weekend.

RTR,

Tim

Cause it's Ga. Dot. It's pretty much come to be expected around here. If there's a holiday, they seem to make sure to really mess the already overcrowded roads up a little more!
