🏈 Backup QB Reps

Do you guys see our back up QB's being at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to getting game reps? In most cases its considered unethical to continue throwing the ball once the game is out of hand so other than "running" the offense at the line and relaying calls what significance is there with putting in the backups other than to protect your starter??

If we are up by 30 at the half I could still see GM starting the 3rd and by the time Star or Darrah come in its time to hand off to Grant and Goode but really no passes. Every other position can gain quality playing time and game reps but the QB situation really stinks for me.

You know, I felt the same way watching the FIU game. If we are playing the second string, I think you should run your offense normally to get them some real, game-time, experience. The opponent has something called a defense that's job is to stop any string playing. If the second or third string scores then so be it. Maybe it will make our opponent better trying to stop us.

I think that is good just to get the back up in to get some game time experence....throwing or not, it gives him a chance to manage the game.

Good point! I also think it gives him a chance to see the difference between practice and real game speed.

I do think you should continue with the offensive game plan when the second string is in the game.

If you recall in the Iron Bowl last season, McElroy threw the TD to Maze. I think you should stay with the game plan to an extent. You don't start slinging it all over the field but you run your offense. Mix in a few hitch routes or out routes, no go routes or deep posts.

The backups practice just as much as the starters. To expect Jackson or Darrah just to execute handoffs to the RBs is unreasonable. It is not a rub it in, run up the score thing, it is giving these guys real game experience. I'd expect the conservative, hand off only approach if it were clear that this is the last series of the game. Still, if they want to line up in press man even then, I'd let the QB air one out over the top on them.

This was solely based on coverage though and not because this was the intended play. Thats why there was a little controversy if you will and Tubs is still claiming that we were trying to run up the score on them as late as a few weeks ago in an interview.

The play was a designed out/curl routes to the outside at the sticks. The D rolled into press man thus allowing the option of running go routes. There was no intent to chunk it deep to run up the score. Tubberville was and is just a cry baby. We ran our offense and thats it. All pass plays have the option of running other routes based on the coverage given.

I guess I should've cleared up my previous post. I know what you are saying, hand off only if its the last series. At any other time, you got to run the offense.
