It broke yesterday that the B1G is following the ACC footsteps and moving to a 20 game schedule. This move has something to it I think a lot of people are missing--P5 schools eliminating more of the at-large bids to the smaller conferences.
Two games may not seem like it's that much until you start adding it all up. That's 30 games lost from the ACC's move. There's another 28 with the B1G's move. So, a total of 58 games are off the table for your schools coming out of conferences like the Mountain West.
Think about this for a second. San Diego State wins 25+ games last season and doesn't make it in. What happens to their schedule when they have difficulty scheduling P5 teams?
Consider Bama scheduling 20 games (assuming the SEC adopts this as well.)
You have to figure the Tide is also going to schedule at least five quality OOC games against teams like the ones on the schedule this season. You also have to assume they are going to participate in the pre-season tournaments.
Now we're looking at
20 conference games
05 out of conference games
04 pre-season games at the least.
Guys, there's 29 games right off the bat. UNC played eight in the post season last year.
Where's the room for the smaller schools?
