Auburn signee Brodarious Hamm diagnosed with cancer

Auburn signee Brodarious Hamm has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer, Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn confirmed Tuesday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family," Malzahn said. "He's a fine young man with a fine family. He has a great attitude... We're going to be there for him. He's going to get through this and we expect him to be with us after a short period of time after he gets healthy."

Hamm, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound offensive tackle from Griffin, Georgia, reportedly began chemotherapy last week and his prognosis is positive.

"At first, I was scared," Hamm told 247Sports. "But I talked with the doctor and he said I'd be alright. He was just like, "This is nothing to worry about. Believe in the treatment and believe in God and everything will be alright."

Hamm reportedly hopes to enroll on the Plains in May or August. He is Auburn's second 2016 signee to be diagnosed with cancer. Defensive tackle Tashawn Manning of Apopka, Florida, is currently battling acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Hamm originally committed to Tennessee before flipping to Auburn last June. Malzahn touched on his versatility on National Signing Day in February.

"He has the ability to play inside or play tackle," Malzahn said. "He's a big, athletic guy, and a very smart guy. We're excited about coaching big Brodarious."

AL.com's attempts to reach Hamm were not immediately successful.

I think it was an E60 I saw the other day about mostly young soccer players getting cancers because of the little rubber bits they grind up and put all over these synthetic fields. If the link between the rubber bits and cancer is true, there will be more and more cases of this showing up, unfortunately. Those fields have popped up everywhere.

It is interesting you mention that because the Vet (Veterans Stadium, in Philly) had this nasty super hard turf that is thought by many back home to have given players (and fans, employees, etc.) a rare form of brain cancer. 5 players have thus far been diagnosed (4 of whom were killed by it), all players from the Vet days. My parents had season tickets at the Vet for over 20 years, and knew of at least 4 other fans who had the same cancer, and at least 2 employees (vendors) who also died from it .. Makes you wonder, that's for sure.

According to USA Today:

"Five Phillies victims [Darren Daulton, Ken Brett, Tug McGraw, Johnny Oates, John Vukovich] in such a short span is apparently a lot. National studies have indicated males have a 0.7 percent chance of being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, with women at 0.6 percent. Local figures seem to indicate that 3.14 percent of the Phillies' 159 players from 1973 (Brett's only year on the team) to 1983 (Daulton's first season with the club) were diagnosed with brain cancer."
