You may be right, stomp. Saban, however, is not what I'd call a ball-of-fire on camera. He's as dry as an Anglican priest. Barring an extreme image makeover I don't believe he'd be that successful.

Saban isn't an administrator. When he retires he's headed for the lake house. He can make a lot more money at ESPN than he could as an AD.

Are you saying he doesn't have the talent to be an administrator or he doesn't want to be an administrator? If you're saying he doesn't have the talent to administrate I would ask you: then what has he been doing for the past eight years?

He hasn't been running the athletic department. He hasn't been responsible for the marketing, P&L, sponsorship, fund raising, ticket sales or facilities of any sport. He would need to do that for ALL sports. CNS has many talents, but you don't put the full operation of a major college athletic program into the hands of a first timer. In my opinion, I don't think he wants that job. It's not where his talent and experience is and I believe when he's done, he's done. Even if he moves to the broadcast booth (I believe he'd be comfortable in the in-studio role but not color commentary), it's not a year round job. I'm a Nick fan as football coach, but not an AD.

On the other, with his success and fame, all he probably has to do is show his face and the panties drop and the wallets come out. But I don't think he enjoys that aspect. The day to day operations are done by an assistant AD.

CNS has been involved in many things that have benefitted the football program and other sports. But the bottom line did not fall to him. He knows there are many things that impact recruiting and the things he has done have made a big impact. Many of these things are not in his job description, but he does them to make the whole program better. He has not been responsible for marketing (although some of the things he's done have helped with marketing). If he needs to delegate the responsibilities of the role, then why have the role? Again, I don't think he'd want the role and I'd want someone who gives 100% attention (instead of spending time to make sure his other business ventures are moving forward [his Mercedes dealership]). I hear what you guys are saying, but when he retires he's headed to the lake.

Yup, don't disagree. Just because you're good at doing it doesn't mean you'd be good at getting others to do it. Hell, he might be awesome at it, but he hasn't proven that. There are limited spots for coaches on a team, I'd rather have someone who knows what they are doing in one of those positions.

Right now it works that way because he's the football coach. When/if he becomes the AD, he'll have to beg and plead like other ADs. Any major decisions by an assistant AD still need to get approval by the AD. If any of those decisions don't go the right direction, the AD gets the heat.

I don't see it that way. When he retires, the man will be a legend, hopefully with a couple more titles, and will probably be revered among the fan base and the southeast.

Think of it this way, if a retired Coach Bryant walked through your door, who among us wouldn't give what he had to the man and for the betterment of the program? If AD Coach Saban told you we needed a new a facility, you'd believe him and be ready to shovel the first clod of dirt yourself.
