🏈 Assuming Bama Loses Coach Kirby Smart

My reason for thinkinghe stays....or takes a job that doesn't get as much media attention as the others....is experience. Coach Mac had some prior to coming to Alabama.....then took a stepping stone job, then jumped to Florida. I wouldn't want my first head coaching job to be 1) in the SEC
2) with an in state rival that is near the top with a relatively young coach doing well

But I'm selfish and don't want him to leave
You and me too!

Someone post a list of reasons why he's more likely to stay than go so I can remain in willful denial, please.

$1.2 million reasons with less of the headache and stress of a HC. Least it sounds good. :-)

There's rumor around the Ath Dept that Smart may get a contract extension and raise after this season.
He's one year removed from being vested in the Alabama retirement system (a concern from his wife as much as him.)

It's my opinion it'll take an offer of around 3 million for the move to take place.

I was thinking it would take probably double what he makes now too. Couldn't see him taking around the same or less just to be a HC.

I've been saying this for a while.

A lot people will and still do say that "Bama isn't a program for a on-the-job head coach training". But, if we want to ccontinue The Process, who better to ensure that it continues than an assistant who's been working directly under Saban for 10+ years?
Then you've been correct for a while.

Over the past four or five years Kirby has changed from that "player/buddy" type of coach to more of a CEO type of assistant. Daily operations that Saban has overseen the past few years have been shifting and Kirby has been taking more responsibilities. One of our DB's that graduated last year said that he'd seen a dramatic change in how he's been handling his job ... call it "OTJ training" if you will ... point is, he's more involved in daily operations than people give him credit.

Sounds like Saban has been grooming him for quite some time. Saban may be retiring sooner than we think.

Coach AJ says he and Saban talk often. As much as Saban has been involved with all sports, mostly behind the scenes (helping with recruiting other sports, etc), it begs the question if maybe Saban does indeed become AD. Battle is getting old. He was brought in initially to be a temporary AD.

Reading between the lines, it looks as though Battle will retire in the next 2-3 years, and Saban hangs up his whistle to run the AD. This would make Smart's transition to HC even more seamless than thought.

I don't even know that 3 million would do it, to be honest.

When it comes to their finances, the Smart's are pretty well off. He's certainly not "head coach rich," but he's got some bank.
He's gotta love it where he is, his action during practice and animation on the sidelines shows that and he did turn down his own alma mater.

I don't know how long he intends to stay, hopefully more than a couple years, but I do know it's probably best not to talk about it. The less chatter about Saban retiring there is, the better for the program. You don't want the media talking about something like that because then rival coaches are talking to recruits like that. We should be several years away from that, but several high profile older coaches are retiring already, leaving Saban as one of the oldest high profile coaches. As far as we want to be concerned for recruiting purposes, he'll coach until he's Bill Snyder's age.

I dont see his enthusiasm diminishing the least bit; if anything he seems to be enjoying the process more than ever. Plus a guy like Saban would have no idea what to do with free time. He would go crazy watching the ducks shit the lawn. My money would be on CNS surprising everyone with how much he has left in the tank.

I'm not sure he has any interest in becoming the AD either. If he hangs it up the networks would fight to the death trying to sign him as an analyst, and for good reason. He would instantly be the best in the bizz. He's even got the voice for it.

What has Cris done that makes you want this?

Cris was the one that urged the Bama staff to put the full court press on Amari Cooper before anyone knew who Amari Cooper was. Saw him at a camp, and immediately identified him as the best WR prospect he had seen.

With the name recognition, and the eye for the talent I think he would be a great recruiter. Oh... and seeing as how he is a HOF WR he may know a thing or two about how to play the position. : )

I wouldn't waste a spot on an unproven ex-NFL WR who hasn't coached/recruited. GA position sure, but not a coaching spot.
