💬 Arian Foster interview w/ Joe Rogan

Arian is an interesting guy, he's made some comments over the years that have made me laugh.

The fishbowl comments later in the video speak to something that most folks overlook. How he's learning who he is and growing into himself while all eyes on are you. A perspective that most will never have, but something to remember when you want to cast stones at athletes for how they handle situations.

I see both sides of the pay an athlete discussion. I don't stand firmly on either side.

I do believe Arian has underestimated the value of the platform he was given. AND I highly doubt that an astronomer would have given him money for doing kick ass things in college...

If I remember correctly, Arian would have gotten a pretty good scholarships based on his SAT & gpa to go just about anywhere.

What if there weren't scholarships and athletes were paid/billed for what they used. How would that look...

Meh, I know guys that paid him for his jerseys and stuff like that, so he never went hungry like he said a few years ago in an interview. Smoke and mirrors is all it is. Let's see if he could have made the millions he did with the platform he was given at Tennessee, with just his brain and can do attitude. Yep, wouldn't happen. So confident in that I'd put my life on it.

Let me say these guys do get paid and something worth a lot more than 1/105 of the ticket sales would ever yeild them. I get so pissed hearing this that it is ridiculous. They get the opportunity for a free education, great food, housing and with more tutoring help and advantages than anyone else could ever hope for. It gives them a guaranteed 4 year degree and if they put in moderate effort they can get a graduates degree. Meanwhile they play football for Alabama and have the opportunity to have an in with hundreds of great businesses because of this affiliation. It absolutely stupid to say these kids don't recieve compensation! Could they be given a larger stipend to make ends meet a little easier.. yes but make no bones about it.. the advantages they receive are huge and worth way more than what little they would get "paid" for playing.

I can see some points about his health issues and get it. It's the crapola he slings after the fact that Arian is well noted for. It was Arian who once confessed that he took money and Tacos at 10essee, cause he had nothing to eat. Maybe the volunteer's scholarship doesn't come with a place of residence and a meal plan. Do you remember this?

QUOTE:
"There were plenty of times where throughout the month I didn't have enough for food," Foster said in the 90-minute documentary. "Our stadium had like 107,000 seats; 107,000 people buying a ticket to come watch us play. It's tough just like knowing that, being aware of that. We had just won and I had a good game, 100 yards or whatever. You go outside and there's hundreds of kids waiting for you. You're signing autographs, taking pictures, whatever.
"Then I walk back, and reality sets in. I go to my dorm room, open my fridge, and there's nothing in my fridge. Hold up, man. What just happened? Why don't I have anything to show for what I just did? There was a point where we had no food, no money, so I called my coach and I said, 'Coach, we don't have no food. We don't have no money. We're hungry. Either you give us some food, or I'm gonna go do something stupid.' He came down and he brought like 50 tacos for like four or five of us. Which is an NCAA violation. [laughs] But then, the next day I walk up to the facility and I see my coach pull up in a brand new Lexus. Beautiful."

I believe my follow up questions would go something like:

When you saw your coach the next day pull up in a brand new Lexus, did you ever think to ask him if that's the same type car he pulled up in when he was in school? When you left 10essee and signed your NFL contract, what kind of car did you buy? Could you ever imagine a 10essee student or even yourself with a graduate degree buying a Lexus?

I've been listening to Arian Foster for years doing interviews with the Texans and the only problem is that he keeps telling the world the painful truth, but only after he leaves the premises.

And the guy on the right quickly points out the technical issue with it. Plus the money isn't the football departments money it is the athletic departments money so player would only get a 1/105 share of whatever percentage was left after every other sport, coach and facility got their share instead of a scholarship. Trust me, as an old man who has been working a long time the education will pay you much much more.

But we've seen much of this change recently, with the COA and meal plan changes updates over the last few years.

I'd argue it isn't a free education, they put alot of work into being a student-athlete. And there aren't any guarantees for a 4 year degree.

Like I said, I see both sides of the discussion. Why is my opinion or your opinion any more valid than the student-athlete's opinion? And my opinion has changed over the years, I used to think they got a "free education" but after talking with some student-athletes, my opinion has changed greatly on the subject. Let's not even discuss how the other sports are given partial scholarships and how that changes every year...

As for me, I went into the service right out of high school and got my college degree while I was working a full time job in my 30's :D

And those "tats" would have had to set Arian back a few tacos too.

My $70,000 in student loans would argue his free tuition was more valuable, not to mention the free medical attention he received while my parents still paid the extra money to give me half ass medical insurance that costs even more if you have to use it. Never had a coach buy me tacos either. I had to go out and earn my money to the point where a taco was all I could afford. Oh yeah, I wasn't immediately thrusted into a multi-million dollar position and given money by strangers either simply because of the platform his school handed him.

Sorry, I could lay into his ass a hundred different ways with his bullshit. This fucker was paid plenty, from the program and for memorabilia, trust me.
