Well....ole ara...love or hate him...he made a dang-gutsy call i have ever seen in football before or since....
Sugar Bowl...1973...me n ms50+ sitting in the end zone in the old Tulane stadium they called the Sugar Bowl.....cold...shivering...
Bama had 4 and 17 at the 50...less then 2 minutes to go...and punted...ND roughed the punter (wasnt an auto first then) but the punt was downed at the 1...take 4 n 2 or give them the ball at the 1???? Bear chose the latter...and had 2 TOs...
ND ran QB sneak on first and second...under a minute..TO bama...3rd..Bama ready for QB sneak..no ND throws for first to wide open TE...first down...under a minute to go..no TOs..ND players started taunting Bama players...
Gutsiest call ever....
Ara later laughed when he heard Bama was still claiming 73 NC....which was awarded to Bama before bowl .... RIP Ara...
73 game was when I really started getting into bama football as a kid and was very upset after the game (I was 9). Those games with Ara were why the 2012 game was so sweet. When someone leaves that kind of an impression you have to respect them. RIP Ara but I still do not like ND.
He was finished at ND by 1974 and everyone expected him to go pro, but instead dug in as a color analysis and he was only about 50 years old. I suspect that the pressure of winning is an exhaustive endeavor. You think about it, none of his successors have come close to his overall excellence and really the dominance of past Irish glory has never been the same.
Notre Dame needs to be in a conference. That, in my opinion, is holding them back. Imagine if they played in the ACC. I understand playing Army, Navy, Temple is cool but having to play an ACC schedule and then one day an ACC title that would put them back in the spotlight. Or they can stay an indie and stay sucking and that would be fine with me.
Respect for Coach Ara, just disliked ND from the word go. As stated earlier, the 2012 game was so sweet! Even sweeter was seeing those smug ND fans leave in droves during the 3rd quarter. RIP Coach and much respect!!
