šŸˆ Anyone Want to Talk Recruiting? (Saban updates numbers/status of '17 class)

Not this year, NEXT year, we lose a lot of starters through graduation and junior attrition.

And yes, it would be great to have next year's DBs making headway now and during the season.

What do you mean, TUSK? WHICH year? After the 2017-2018 football campaign, we will lose H Jones, Minkah, T Brown, A. Averett, Levi Wallace, and MAYBE Ronnie Harrison out of the secondary. So like maybe the whole secondary. The replacements are Aaron Robinson, D. Thompson, S. Carter, maybe Nigel Knott, Trevon Diggs, Shawn Jennings, Kyriq McDonald, Jerod Mayden. I don't know where Keaton Anderson might factor in. The newcomers like Xavier McKinney and Daniel Wright will be important.

On the DL we lose Hand, Jamar King (for whatever that's worth), J Frazier, and surely Daron Payne. Replacement are Q Williams, I Buggs, R Davis, with OJ Smith and Johhny Dwight providing a bit of depth? Phidarian Mathis and LaBryan Ray will be the newcomers.

At the Jack/LB positions we lose R Evans, SD Hamilton, but everyone else will be back and we have tremendous depth.

So, when we are in our 'nickel' which we play over 60% of the time (?) we will be losing 3 or 4 out of the 5, presuming Diggs starts and Harrison goes pro, in the secondary, and all of the starting defensive front. Admittedly, if Buggs shows up and Davis and Q Williams continue to improve, we could be ok there, but we will ALL continue to decry the lack of depth. Overall, it's NINE defensive starters - wow!

Could next year be a year where we DO rebuild, rather than reload? A lot depends on how much Saban plays the 2nd teamers this year, or everyone is gonna be MIGHTY green in the secondary come 2018!

I mean next year, the same next year you are describing. It does seem important to get a lot of green recruits some serious reps this season. If we get picked on at the Humphrey corner all season, I will be mortified. What will that be saying about the youngsters coming up? If our DBs are in the same shape as when we felt compelled to give Cyrus all that on the job training, we are in trouble. If the talent and depth are there and given the time some have been in the system already we should have a few more Averettes waiting in the wings. That's talent and depth.

I feel like we were picked on when Humphrey was there.

It's the thought of next year's starting DBs that have me waking up in a cold sweat.

Well yeah, at this point it's almost a complete crap shoot. But by the end of the year I'm sure a few guys will be ready to roll.

My best guesses:

Corner:
Aaron Robinson
Nigel Knott

Safety:
Jarod Mayden
Daniel Wright
(W/ out Dionte Thompson)

Star:
Shy Carter

*I'm super intrigued with Kyriq McDonald. Just don't know at his size if he will beat some of these cats out. But he's aggressive with instincts like Cyrus was... And probably bigger?

**Can't remember if Mayden was working with corners or safeties before the injury? But Xavier McKinney could be a good bet as well.

*** Super cool that all of our DB signees from this class were early enrollee's. Could make a huge difference for that next season. These competitions have already begun! Should make next spring pretty intriguing in the D Backfield.

This I know. 22 is the number today.

This squad is, with no mistake, a reload. They are being VERY selective in the process this season versus others. It's May, for god's sake, and we KNOW what camp performance means.

Nick Saban reveals the size of Alabama's 2018 recruiting class

Three high school athletes have already pledged to play for Alabama starting in 2018.

If they remain committed, 19 more will join them, according to Nick Saban.

Saban said Monday on the SEC teleconference that the Crimson Tide's next signing class will consist of 22 players.

"We want to get 22 good players that have good character, that want to commit to the same things we do here at Alabama to help them be successful as people, as students and as players," Saban said.

Saban offered that response to a question about the Dec. 20-22 early signing period approved by the Collegiate Commissioners Association last week.

Saban has some reservations about the potential impact of this new wrinkle in the recruiting calendar.

"I think evaluation is important and I think the sooner you have to make decisions on these guys, the greater opportunity you have to make mistakes," he said. "So, we're trying to make sure that we accelerate and do a great job in the evaluation process and I still think the summer, June, is going to be a real important time for a lot of these guys. But a lot of guys are committing earlier and earlier and I'm sure the biggest fear was that having an earlier signing date was that it is going to become the signing date and it would accelerate recruiting in the season, make more guys take visits in the season.

"These things will probably be true. I don't know if all those things are good things. I don't know if accelerating the calendar, like we're talking about, letting guys visit in the spring, is all that good either. Football is a developmental game. A lot of guys you look at when they're seniors look a lot different when they were sophomores and juniors. By doing all of this, we sort of minimize the opportunity to be able to evaluate some of those guys, which affects their opportunity, too. So, we can talk about all the opportunity we're giving guys early. But we're also eliminating some opportunity for some late bloomers."

It's a sensible argument presented by a man who has landed the No. 1 recruiting class in each of the last seven years. He'll try to extend that streak next winter with the 22 players he is planning to add to his roster in 2018.

With Saban shedding light on the number at 22 and we have 3 commits to date, doesn't the Brannon kid from Cullman and possibly Parks count in this number? I've read where Parks' coach has said there is "like a 60% chance of Jarez coming in this summer" and that would mean that he indeed would count in the '17 class. If he is delayed, we have 17 slots to fill and Saban and staff will be super selective!

We'll soon find out.

There's no way to tell on Jarez because we don't know how the academics of the other signees will end up. They anticipate they'll qualify, but until they graduate step one hasn't even been reached.

You're right. The blue shirts are supposed to count towards next seasons class.

We've got high school graduation, along with summer school (starts in a tad over two weeks) and then we'll have a pretty good idea.

22 sounds like a great number. But who knows many freshman will get the boot, leave, etc. I'm a little green on football rules, but can't early enrollee's count towards the previous class if they're short of 25?

Only thing I know is when dealing with 85 4-5 star athletes, their parents, and a college atmosphere, things NEVER go as planned. Probably the fun in it for Saban actually... Adjust and Attack.
