| FTBL Another tradition, another NCAA record, that falls by the wayside with the new playoff format. Unintended consequences strikes again.

Two decades ago, when teams weren't playing 14 or more games in a season, reaching the 10 win mark meant something. I'm not saying this on the heels of last seasons win total; more in retrospection over the last few years. I've mentioned it before, winning 10 games in a season won't guarantee a team a NYD bowl game.

It dawned on me this morning. A school and their number of bowl appearances and number of bowl wins? Out the window. It means nothing when a team can participate in two bowl games in a season and win both. Look at ND.

And yet we fell short in both respects.

I’ve figured out how to win a championship in the new era. You have to play a weak schedule and make the playoffs, then just play better than you ever have and you’ll be the champion. All 4 teams left in the playoffs had the easiest schedules in college football. They played 1 or 2 good teams all year and that’s how they squeaked in. So bama needs to join the acc or big 12, win the title every year and they will be a perennial playoff participant. Easy peasy.

But. Like most things in life....things change.

When they were "amatures" player safety was paramount... @TideatMileHigh
But they aren't more. N like nfl...play more games for more revenue

When # bowls and bowl wins was a standard... @TerryP
Its making cfp as standard now
What will bowls do .... saw one had 3400 or something ( Bahama bowl)
Independence bowl saw Marshall bow out

How does conference loaded with G5 teams even get cfp spot ( boise) ...
and big 12 loaded with g5 teams now. ...
Win 1-2 competitive games and make cfps.

And sec. Ole ms / bama/ usc beaten several teams in cfp. Maybe not bama.

There was a advertising guy on ESPN last year trying to explain that butts in seats for bowl games looked good on TV but not really that important. He said AS LONG as companies saw major value in advertising their products on TV things would continue regardless of attendance. Those organizations in the city that produce the bowl might not see it that way.

Thats why bowls expanded. The advertising is more important than the game ( certainly not to most players n fans of team playing). Andcities get to show off their goodies.
Doesnt matter if it 5-7 team. Or 7-5 team. ..

Don’t consider records or competition. Get the best draw, teams that will be of highest interest in the region. Play meaningless game, count the money, go home.
New mantra, it just means less.

I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I honestly wish they wouldn't include the bowl games in the playoffs. Let the playoffs be the playoffs, and let the bowl games be the bowl games. Yes, I now the big bowls like the Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta, Peach, and Rose would possibly wind up with teams who have 3 (or more) losses and that it wouldn't be that big of a draw. And I also think they need to get rid of some of the smaller bowls that have come about in the past few years. Now, it seems they're just making up bowls (Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl...?) just so teams can play in them. And I remember a couple/few years there were a handful of teams with only 5 wins that went to bowl games. That meant a team with a losing record got to go to a bowl game. So do away with the smaller bowls, keep the original NY6 Bowls for bigger teams that didn't make the playoffs, and keep the playoffs separate.
