FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas coach John L. Smith says he is making plans to declare bankruptcy as a result of several land developments gone bust in Kentucky.

Smith was hired by the Razorbacks in April to replace Bobby Petrino, who was fired after revelations that he had hired his mistress in the football department and given her $20,000 in gifts.
Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long says Smith told him of his financial problems during the hiring process. Long says he is comfortable the issue will not affect Smith's ability to coach Arkansas in the wake of the Petrino scandal.
Smith, also a former head coach at Michigan State and Louisville, says he was a partner in the land deals and that total money involved is in the "multimillions."

I don't think this is any type of distraction for the team. What strikes me most about the report is the point he brought it up to Jeff Long during the interview process. That's to be commended. His personal financial situation and investments have no bearing on a job interview. But, bringing it up with Long ensures it isn't something Long would be caught with by surprise.

Knowing how some of the media operate now-a-day, it's an easy assumption one of the yahoo's would try to bring it up in a presser when it had no reason to be mentioned in the first place.

NOW, if it was someone like Donnan and his alleged involvement in a ponzi scheme? That goes directly to ones honesty and credibility and would be fair game as I see it.

Arkansas isn't a rival in my eyes. You won't find me rooting against them in games they play. So, keep that in mind when I say this.

Yesterday, I noticed a tweet from Cobi Hamilton who is likely to be their "star receiver" for this fall.

Cobi Hamilton ‏@CobiHam11

"The University of Arkansas does NOT take care of their student athletes financially and I hope all my 14,000 plus followers see this"

The tweet has been taken down since he put it up. The reason it raised my eyebrows was because while he had a complaint with the way UArk handled disbursements, it's not the kind of thing you thrown out on twitter. It reeked of a petulant child not getting his way.

From what I understand, the disbursement was handled exactly the way it was supposed to be handled. He just didn't like the date.

I see things like this and immediately wonder about a player having a difficult series on the field and losing their mental approach to the game.

That's what I call a distraction.

Yeah, agree, read after I posted on a Arkansas forum that it was discussed during the interview process with AD Long. By distraction I don't mean by the media, but the time it could require him to step away from coaching to deal with ongoing legal issues.

You sure that tweet didn't have anything to do with the balls of the Georgia player?

I believe IC's balls are firmly retracted and his ass on a platter based on that facebook post.

One of the guys that was with IC is no longer on the team as well. It wasn't related to IC's situation in the sense that police stop resulted in him getting the boot. It was on the academic front.

But, indicative of the mindset of both; misplaced priorities.
