Not jumping to conclusions about what may have happened with Smith, but.....

It was reported here that Saban had implemented a 2am curfew for his players. Is it just me, or does it seem like you're just asking for trouble with a 2am curfew in New Orleans of all places. Around here some have a saying that "the Holy Ghost goes to bed at midnight" (even though there's others that actually believe he goes to bed sometime between 10:30 and 11:00pm....but I digress).

In all seriousness, this is really not good news....and I don't just mean for you guys. For as many chuckles as what I'm about to say might garner from the more arrogant and ignorant among you (I'm not assuming anything), we want you at full strength and were really looking forward to the Smith/Kruger matchup.

On the bright side, if whatever he did really did warrant Saban's decision, then Kudos to Saban.

Who is the #2 at that position?

has nothing to do with curfew. it's much more serious. Missing a 2am curfew....probly woudn't have gotten him a full games suspention.
But Coach drew a line in the sand with Jimmy last year. these guys KNOW where that line is. I doubt he'll let himslef get burned by another player again the way he did with Jimmy.

Andre's done far more good than bad! It must be more serious than a curfew violation for CNS to suspend him for an entire bowl game, especially his last.

^^POP

Yes it stinks, but were not going to lose the Sugar Bowl because he's not going to play. If we lose it wasn't because of this...

That being said, I am still calling for a nice UTE butt kicking! :)

What happened last year?

I've said 100X on here that if you pay attention to what Saban says you can draw a lot from his press conferences, etc.

He wrote this press release and I want you to pay particular attention to the area I've put in bold print.

Coach Nick Saban said:
"Andre Smith has been suspended from participating in the Sugar Bowl due to a violation of team rules and policies. The University of Alabama, the team and the football program are more important than any individual player. Everyone on our team depends on each other to be responsible, to make good choices and decisions relative to their actions.

Andre Smith has done an outstanding job in our program as a person, student and a player and we will do all we can as an institution to support him in all future endeavors.

Our priority and focus as a team is to play the best football game of the season in this Sugar Bowl, and to support our players to overcome any adversity this unfortunate situation has created."

We have said time and time again we felt he would enter the draft early.

Based on what he's said, right there, I would say it's very clear he won't be back next season.

Maybe the players will rally behind this and win even more for Smitty and what good he's done for the team during the years. Trying to find a positive in this negative I suppose heh.

This must of been something very serious in order for him not only to suspend him but send him home, even on his last game. I think that last part speaks a lot for how bad whatever happened was.

You don't know that and I am quite certain that this wasn't even close to the problems JJ caused!

Oh man in NO WAY was i implying that AT ALL.
Nothing of these sort. i was just using the thing with JJ to make a point. Coach gave him gave him a second chance, stuck his neck out for Jimmy and ....we all know how that turned out. Compleate bonehead move by Johns. I doubt this thing with Smitty is anywhere even remotely near the severity of that. Like i said the line was drawn and the guys know where it is. Suspending Smitty was just renforecing that line. IMO

I understood what you were saying. All in all, a pretty sucky way to begin the week. Maybe Randle will commit to us early and make it all better. :P

Which really isn't surprising at all.

What would be very surprising to me is, if after all Alabama has been through in recent years, and with each Alabama player knowing very well of the dos/don'ts, Smith risked his eligibility and integrity of the program by doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing in anticipation of his future.

Seriously, for Smith's sake and for the sake of his teammates, I hope he just got caught up in a moment of bad judgement and did something stupid. Otherwise, if he was inappropriately meeting with somebody regarding his future career, that's a slap in the face to his team. My opinion is that if he took any sort of unacceptable gift or anything like that, then his actions are almost unexcusable. Saban said he broke a team rule, which might indicate he just did something dumb, but on the other hand Saban's reference to Smith "future endeavors" might indicate Smith got a bit too jumpy in the starting gates.

It's unfortunate.

Got ya. It probably was more than missing curfew, a situation that Coach Saban couldn't offer a "second chance" (and I'm not sure of this either, fwiw). JJ was dealing coke out on the Quad. Big difference.

Seems to more than likely have something to do with going pro, unauthorized hinting or talking to an agent against team rules.

Like TP highlighted Saban still stands behind him fully so I dont think its drugs, robbery etc... Sucks for us but he has a bright future ahead of him, regardless.

Ross gets a helluva nice Christmas present.

It's important that we as fans don't make too many assumptions about anything that happened with Smitty. There are other people besides Bama fans reading these forums.

ROLL TIDE AND BEAT THE UTES!!!!!

From people in Tuscaloosa this is more than mere 'talking' with any agent. And the 'I only signed a cocktail napkin after a night of drinking' excuse will not fly this time either.

I have no real problem with Smith if he decided he wanted to go ahead and sign with an agent BEFORE he played his last game with Alabama; as long, that is, if he actually told the people in charge and publically gave up his remaining eligibility. He would be moving on with his life and UA would have no liability.

Sketchy facts thus far however tend to imply Smith signed with an agent and tried to keep it all "down home cuz." In the process he demonstrated he was in the end willing to look out for himself and himself only - and put UA in some very serious jeopardy. If this is case then don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out of town Andre. And leave NOW.

So much for you 'having your teammates back.'

By the way, a well connected UF guy is telling some of us that he is pretty confident Arenas will be going pro at season's end too. Coffee is more iffy than people think.

I really do wish there was some sort of violation ($$$) to agents if they are caught going after a college athlete. I mean if the kids can't talk to them, then why should they be allowed to without being fined or reprimanded? That's my stance regardless if Andre did in fact break a rule signing before he should.

I hope we find out soon just so I can move on today.

Well said. IF, this is the case I completely agree with you.

Whatever the circumstances of this situation are, it would appear that there is absolutely no reason why Smith shouldn't be playing in this game save any consequences brought upon himself through his own conduct.
