bbq is something you do to ribs; and it's done on a bbq pit (if done correctly). grilling is something you do to steaks, hotdogs, hamburgers, and/or chicken. granted, you can bbq chicken, but it's usually just grilled.....on a grill.
and bbq normally takes quite a while longer than grilling. it can take several hours, vs. less than an hour for grilling.
if someone can't make that distinction, then i can't help them any further and they should not be allowed to try either as they'll just screw it up.

@TUSKtimes ....Smoked brisket using mesquite...thats real food.( you could smoke anything with mesquite and it would be good)....
smoked ribs...mostly use hickory....sauce.....not really....most time sauce is used when cooked in oven...see Applebees, Chiles, etc....
Real hickory smoked ribs need no help....
Pork....pulled.when hot...or cool and slice....good sauce ( lightly sauced) or no sauce...cant go wrong .....
That food for Crimson Tide football weekends...and cold beer of course
@TerryP agreed. yankees and Californians are the only ones that call grilling, cooking on the BBQ.
BBQ is smoked pork and brisket (Texas)........outside of that, everything else is grilled.
