I was listening to 790 The Zone yesterday and UGA's former all-great defensive player David Pollock stated that if Alabama runs more than 150 yards as a team we would probably win.

Maybe I'm ignorant, but I think that is definitely "do-able". He then went on to say anything over 200 = ugly for UGA. I know UGA is ranked 3rd in rushing defense, but have they faced a line as strong as ours? We know S. Carolina isn't known for their offense and that is a given for Central Michigan and Georgia Southern. I didn't watch the Arizona State game, but I don't recall their name in any of the top line discussions/rushing stats as well.

That one comment alone tells me that Pollock doesn't seeing a problem in our "one-dimensional" game.

I hate that term one-dimensional when sports writers compare us to that. IMO, it's too early in the season to really be able to put a finger on just what this 08 team is in terms of identity or 'labeling".

I don't think our opponents we've played so far have caused us to abandon the 'down your throat' running schemes, so we've stuck to what we needed to do to put us in the best scenario for success (the W at the end of the day). We did see some passes in WKU game, which was nice. I think we'll see a good mixutre of both for the game this weekend. Maybe stuff we haven't seen as Terry and others have elududed to in recent posts.

I don't think UGA can completely shut down our running game and I think if we stick with the 7-15 yard passes after 1st down then I think our offense has a chance of moving the ball fairly well. Just don't let JPW throw it deep  . Who knows though as its also hard to judge where UGA really shines on defense since they also haven't played any real defining games up to this point based on their opponents.

It's gonna be an exciting Saturday and it can't get here soon enough! a$#

I meant to imply sarcasm with my quotation marks around one-dimensional. Let 'em think we're one dimensional. They obviously didn't watch anything other than last week's game.

No one seems to be giving us a chance based on this dreamed up one-dimensional approach.

Pollack's observation is a restatement of what is usually true in any game involving a team with a run-first game plan. I agree with Pollack. Rushing over 150 yards would mean good things for us and bad things for them.

If we run for less than 100 yards, it will be for one or two primary reasons:

1. We were unable to run and had to resort exclusively to the pass.
2. We get behind early and have to play catch-up much of the game, passing first and abandoning the run (like Clemson did).

Rushing yards between 100 and 150, in my mind, will indicate we had moderate success running the ball (or we hit one big one to skew the numbers), but we still had to pass more in a close game.

We could still win the game if we rush for less than 100 yards, but it would take a very good game from JPW and the receivers.

RTR,

Tim

I'm also noticing people saying "this games rests on JPWs shoulders". IMO, it doesn't as mentioned above, we are a run-first offense. IF they do shutdown our running game, then year a lot of responsibly will be on JPW to have a 2008 breakout game.

^^I would love nothing more than to run it down their throats all night  .

I'm more of a fan of the run than pass. Love to see a team just grind it out and impose your will on the other team.

I think Geogia and Bama have one other thing in common. They haven't had a true test yet. A little stat nugget.

Yes, Georgia is #3 in Rushing Defense. That said, they gave up 4.5 yards per carry to the two Georgia Southern backs. Georgia held Central Michigan RBs to 3.8 ypc, but Ohio (not state) held CM back to a 2.6 ypc. These weaker teams (much like Western C) only had a limited number of running plays, mainly because they were behind. If Alabama keeps the game close at hand, they should have an avantage at the running game.

Stats I heard today. South Carolina is ranked #96 in rushing offense, Central Michagan is #98 Arizona State #107 and Georgia Southern is #62 in div AA.

So yeah UGA hasn't seen a running game yet. Of course they are going to stop those guys. hell UNLV did.
