Lou Holtz, the 77-year old ESPN college football analyst, told the website Notre Dame 24/7 that he plans on retiring after the 2014 season.

ā€œI’d like to leave when people say, ā€˜Why are you leaving?’ not ā€˜When are you leaving?ā€™ā€ he said. ā€œThis is my fifth last year. They usually talk me into it. ESPN is a great organization to work for. We’ve been together nine years now. That’s unusual. They’re like my family. I love them. We enjoy it. There comes a time where you need to step aside and let the younger people do it.ā€

Was Holtz joking or serious? He’s played the ā€œI’m retiringā€ card a few times before as he alluded to in that quote. Also, he said this:

Q: On why he wants to retire after the 2014 season:
ā€œI’d like to practice my golf a little more. I’ve been everywhere except to bed. I’ve spoken to everybody except my wife. Somebody said, ā€˜Do you ever go anywhere where people don’t recognize you?’ I said home. I owe it to her to spend a little more time with her. I said that last year too.ā€

So, does Mark May have to play nice this year? Will ESPN take wipers off the cameras? Will Chris Fowler and Mark May's drying cleaning bill drop after next season? So many questions that need to be answered but only time will tell.

There's one thing I won't miss about Holtz retiring—those that promote him as a "paragon of virtue" in the college football coaching ranks.

Only real smile I needed was watching Alabama beat down Notre Dame a few years ago and listening to him have to deal with that.

Tell you this, I'd love to have had him as a grandfather just for the stories and experiences he could share.

I always thought he seemed like a decent and intelligent guy, even if he is a domer homer. Would love to sit down and talk football with him. Bet he has some great stories.
