Apparently, even amid tense rivalries and SEC domination, a certain High Holy Day in the Jewish faith trumps the religion of football in the South.Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham, Ala., has a few words of warning to its congregants regarding college football on Sept. 14. Members of the temple are reminded that they are*not allowed to talk about, celebrate or find out the scores from football games that day.Sept. 14 happens to be Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jewish people. On that day, members of the Jewish faith are not allowed to eat, drink or bathe, and they are certainly not supposed to watch college football. That day also happens to be when the Alabama-Texas A&M*and Auburn-Mississipi State*games are, which poses a moral dilemma for those Crimson Tide fans who want to watch their team try to avenge last season’s loss against Johnny Manzielā€˜s Aggies. The temple published an announcement with some pretty strong wording against being involved, in any way, with co...

As a Jew I feel like I need to point out that a majority of Jews are reform or reconstructionist and that this sounds like a conservative temple. Most Jews I know still follow their sports (and bathe!) even on YK.

Edit: Just checked and that temple says it IS reform .. Must be a conservative branch though?

To my fellow Hebrews and Shebrews .. Roll tide!

I went to school with a few. If they were observant of these holy days it was not obvious.

In my college years I supplemented my income by playing bridge professionally. There were many of Jewish descent in the competitions, but I only remember one player who observed the Sabbath and would not compete from sundown Friday until sundown Saturday.

Maybe its just cause I dont really pay attention to that stuff, I mean I cant even think of a single catholic I've ever met but I'm pretty confident I HAD to have met a few at some point. Only reason I KNOW that's I've met a Muslim is because it got brought in a western civ class.

I'm incredibly tolerant, but really? It's "because of (them)" that the SEC has won so many championships? Direct line to the Big Referee in the Sky or something?

Interested to hear how that works out for them, though.

Are we sure this wasnt some tongue-in-cheek troll? I know a couple of reform Jews and I cant imagine them being serious about this. Of course, the guy i know is a Ga Tech fan :)

I've never even met a jewish person (at least that I KNEW was jewish) so kinda surprising there are jewish temples and stuff here. lol

I never knew of any either til i was driving from Irondale to Bham on Crestwood Blvd, and right past Trinity hospital entrance (old Montclair), there it was. Pretty big place. A temple, gym, park, community center....i never knew there was one around. Lol

Messianic = Jews who believe Jesus is the messiah (they are NOT Christians though, there's a difference)

I believe at least some Messianic Jews believe in the divinity of Jesus as Messiah, and rely on that faith (and not the observance of Jewish Law) as a means of salvation. They also consider the Old and New Testament Christian Bible as Scripture. That meets many folks' definition of a Christian.

RTR,

Tim
