TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ā Alabama softball won both games of its Tuesday doubleheader at Rhoads Stadium, posting wins over North Alabama and Alcorn State.
Alabama (38-6) started the day with a 6-1 win over North Alabama (30-12) before posting a 4-0 shutout over Alcorn State (15-25) in the second game. The Crimson Tide threw three pitchers between the two games, allowing just one run on five hits over 14.0 innings pitched with
Jaala Torrence (6-1) and
Lexi Kilfoyl (9-2) coming away with wins.
Aubrey Barnhart went a combined 3-for-5 on the day while fellow freshman
Kali Heivilin hit her first career home run in game two against the Lady Braves.
In the opener against North Alabama,
Megan Bloodworth got the Tide on the board early with a three-run home run in the first. Alabama put up another three-spot in the second, including a solo home run from Heivilin, to make it 6-0. The Lions erased the shutout in the top of the fifth on an infield RBI single, and that proved the final run of the game as the Tide held on to win, 6-1.
A fielding error in the bottom of the second plated the first run of the game for Alabama against Alcorn State and a bases-loaded walk in the next inning made it 2-0 but the Tide ultimately left the bases loaded, unable to break away further through 3.0 innings. With two in scoring position and two out in the bottom of the fifth, a throwing error extended the inning and allowed
Jenna Johnson to score from third and make it 3-0. A wild pitch then made it 4-0 before a fly ball to center ended the inning.
Alex Salter entered and pitched 2.0 shutout innings in relief to preserve the four-run win.
"I was extremely pleased with the starting pitching. I think all three, Jaala, Lexi and Salter gave us some really good innings in the circle. The most impressive thing in the second game was the fact that we had nine strikeouts and no walks and let our defense handle the rest. I didn't think we hit that well tonight, but give credit to them, she pitched a great game. We took advantage of a couple mistakes and came away with two hits. In both games, there were times when we had four or five freshmen playing at once, and you couldn't even tell. I was really pleased with Kali and her first home run as an Alabama softball player. That was big for her.
Jenna Lord played great defense in the infield and
Aubrey Barnhart had a nice day offensively as well.
KJ Haney earned a couple of walks, so we spread it around and a lot of people got to play."
