🏈 Alabama spring practice report: ESPN packs up while Tide works inside

 • WR DeAndrew White pedaled on a stationary bike throughout the media's viewing period. His injury has yet to be specified by Saban, but he's not wearing anything to indicate that it's affecting the lower body. He caught passes as he pedaled.
 • Spent a little time watching the offensive line go through its early-practice drills. Veterans are taking the lead spots in drills, as Arie Kouandjio, Leon Brown, Ryan Kelly, Alphonse Taylor and Austin Shepherd worked in spots typically held by first-teamers. With Chad Lindsay gone, it's worth noting that Paul Waldrop, Bradley Bozeman and Chris Posa were seen snapping during early drills.
 • Jalston Fowler wasn't the only H-back to get some work carrying the ball with the running backs today. Corey McCarron and Michael Nysewander were also with the group for a period before returning to their normal spots.
 • Alabama's running backs went through a drill in which they carried two balls at once. T.J. Yeldon and Kenyan Drake combined for seven lost fumbles last season, so perhaps this is a new way to re-emphasize ball security.
 • Derrick Henry is still running second in running back drills behind Yeldon and in front of Drake.
 • ESPN was on campus all day, but even the Worldwide Leader doesn't get to stick around for Alabama's practice. David Pollack, Shannon Spake and the crew were packing up during the viewing period and departed at the same time.
 • You can tell it's spring and you can tell Nick Saban has a lot of defensive backs when you watch the cornerbacks go through drills. There's a whole lot of teaching happening at the moment in a group that has two starting jobs wide open for the taking. For what it's worth, Eddie Jackson and Cyrus Jones were first up during most drills, but that shouldn't be viewed as an indication of anything.
 • No change with ArDarius Stewart on this day. Still a safety.
 • No change with the quarterbacks, either, as Blake Sims, Cooper Bateman, Alec Morris and Parker McLeod worked with the wide receivers while David Cornwell threw with the tight ends and H-backs.
 • It was hard to decipher last year because we only saw them work with the scout team, but redshirt freshmen Jonathan Cook and Anthony Averett are now being seen working with specific position groups. Cook is a safety and Averett is a cornerback.
 • Among the cornerbacks, freshman Tony Brown looks to be one of the biggest.
 • Harrison Jones was running on the treadmill while Alabama practiced. We explained why he's not with the team earlier today.
 • Some folks may have missed this Saturday, but Brandon Greene is back with the offensive line and it looks to be permanent. He's got the No. 58 and everything.

One thing to point out Corey McCarron and Michael Nysewander joined Fowler in getting some carries at one point in practice. Might lead some credence to the thought of us moving to a more traditional I-form with fullbacks rather than h-backs.

Casual observation about Gribble (author of this column.)

It's amusing, to me at least, that he goes to the point of mentioning of how Henry is running second and how the offensive line is running drills with the names listed as those who "worked in spots typically held by first-teamers."

But when it comes to the cornerbacks and the point Jackson and Jones are first up in drills; "but that shouldn't be viewed as an indication of anything."

Logic tells me that Jackson and Jones would be the "starters" if we played today—if experience was an indicator. The offensive line is always shuffled in spring drills and it seems to me logic would say "that shouldn't be viewed as an indication of anything."

Maybe it's just me...sure seems like he's using a non sequitur in the CB's...

I would agree that Jones and Jackson would be the de fecato starts at this point, in fact outside of DePriest, Landon, and Robinson those would be the two I would be most positive about being starters on defense at this point.

Birdman37 ...safe to put Ivory in that list as well.

I like the opener with WVU because I think we'll get a glimpse of where we're headed on a few positions.

If history is an indicator we'll open in a nickel set. Who fills that STAR role?

Geez...road grader.

Yeah Ivory would be another tho I think hes gonna be sharing time with someone else, Jarran Reed maybe?

I would put my best guess with Geno Smith at the star unless he takes up the other safety spot rather than Jarrick Williams. or even Nick Perry?
