Alabama roster could undergo big turnover

TUSCALOOSA — No. 4 Alabama is still riding the emotional lift after sneaking into the College Football Playoff two weeks ago.

And with bowl practices slated to begin Friday according to head coach Nick Saban along with several defensive standouts believed to be healthy enough to return to full-time duty, things are looking up for the Crimson Tide (11-1).

With only a New Year’s Day date with top-ranked Clemson (12-1) in the Sugar Bowl national semifinal guaranteed, the opportunity to see some of Alabama’s biggest playmakers of the last few years is dwindling.

Given the annual influx of four- and five-star recruits every offseason, it might appear Alabama is immune to critical roster turnover.

But with a particularly loaded junior class that includes several potential first-round NFL draft prospects, this year’s talent turnover could affect the Tide in a more significant way than normal.

Here’s a look at several players that could be nearing the end of their collegiate careers at the Capstone:

Goners

Any mention of turnover starts with the senior class, with middle linebackers Rashaan Evans and Shaun Dion Hamilton out of eligibility along with All-American senior center Bradley Bozeman and senior punter JK Scott. Also gone are defensive linemen Da’Shawn Hand and Joshua Frazier, receivers Robert Foster and Cam Sims, and first-year starting kicker Andy Pappanastos.

The defensive secondary could lose all six starting members in its dime package.

Alabama was already planning to be without senior cornerbacks Anthony Averett and Levi Wallace, senior star/nickelback Tony Brown and senior safety Hootie Jones, who like Hamilton is expected to miss the postseason after undergoing knee surgery.

But add to that the expected departures by unanimous first-team All-American defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick and junior safety Ronnie Harrison, and Alabama’s starting secondary will have an entirely different look next season.

Fitzpatrick, who won the Bednarik and Thorpe awards last week, and Harrison lead a group of between 4-6 juniors who could leave early for the NFL. Fitzpatrick is projected as a potential Top 5 pick with the ability to play both cornerback and safety.

Junior receiver Calvin Ridley is another potential Top 10-15 pick, while both Harrison and junior defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne are also widely projected to be first-round picks, with some believing Payne could impress enough in workouts to move into the top half of the round.

Maybes

Damien Harris, Alabama’s leading rusher for the second straight season, could be the most likely wildcard to leave early, given the diminished shelf-life for running backs in the NFL and the Tide’s crowded backfield.

Currently ranked as a Top 10 player at his position, Harris has seen his draft stock rise with a big-play ability that has him leading the SEC averaging 8.24 yards per carry and a physical running style that works well in the NFL.

Having to spread carries between five “runners,” including sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts, has limited Harris to 9.2 carries per game this season to rank 20th in the SEC. Nevertheless, Harris had 906 rushing yards and 11 scores.

Bleacher Report NFL draft analyst Matt Miller selected Harris at No. 23 on his list of this year’s Top 25 overall players released late last month, a list that also has Fitzpatrick at No. 3 with Evans, Harrison and Ridley in his Top 15.

Fellow junior tailback Bo Scarbrough, who’s averaging 9 carries per game, is another who could be swayed by the NFL. With a physical frame (6-foot-2, 230 pounds) that scouts covet, Scarbrough has the potential to blow people away should he perform well in NFL workouts.

Others who could leave early include junior guards Lester Cotton and Ross Pierschbacher.

Pierschbacher, a three-year starter who could be in line to take over for Bozeman at center as a senior, is also a Top 150 player, according to several draft prognosticators. Cotton is a big-bodied lineman who has started 17 games the last two seasons and has the physical makeup that NFL coaches value.

Among the highly unlikely candidates to leave early are defensive end Isaiah Buggs, a former junior college transfer, and tight end Hale Hentges, who has become a bigger part of Alabama’s passing attack with three receiving touchdowns so far.

Given the last few years, we have seen a lot of defensive players deciding to come back for their senior campaign. In 2015, Eddie Jackson, Jonathan Allen, Reuben Foster, Ryan Anderson, could have flown the coop but stuck around and how big were they?.

In 2016, Rashaan Evans and Deshawn Hand decided to come back for their senior year. Could you imagine no Evans on top of all our injuries at LB?

Regardless of the recruits coming in, we need 2 of these defensive guys to stick around for one more. Ronnie Harrison and Da'Ron Payne would be the 2 biggest defensive recruits in this year's class. To have that much talent and experience coming back in the middle of our defense would be big, I mean big.

Harris and Scarbrough need to go. RB life cycle just too short to not get paid while you can... And for Harris, why stay? You're a top 5 RB in the country and got 6 carries in the Iron Bowl. SMH

If Bo can stay healthy that's good enough. Too many injury concerns to stick around for more mileage.

Payne is good enough. He gone.

I could see Buggs getting some interest. Piersbacher hasn't been that impressive but 3 years starting is a big deal.

Lots of fresh bodies at DB/RB next season. Some good competition starting this Spring

I just don't see us having 4 juniors go in the first round. Call me crazy. Read a mock draft today on MSN that only had Fitz. Not that that's accurate. There are some stud WR's out there that have had more production, and will get more attention. Some due to being in pass happy teams.

If Harris and Bo get even 4th round grades they should go. I fully expect Harris to be 2nd round. Bo closed out last year so strong and just hasn't had the opportunities this year. Real shame. His stock was hot going into Clemson game and he was on fire in that game until the injury.

NFL teams dont give a shit how many yards you had in college, especially considering all of the air raid/spread style offenses out there. They look at your complete body of work. What do you do with the opportunities you get? Can you block? Are you willing to block? Are you selfish? Things like that. Ridley will make his money at the combine and individual interviews and workouts.

Don't disagree Birdman, but won't surprise me if he goes 2nd round with the QBs, DLs, etc.... and another WR in this draft.

You think we have 4 juniors go first round? I'll eat crow but I just don't see it.

I hope our guys really step up in the final two games and earn some $/raise their stock. Hell, If Humphrey can go 16th, anything can happen. We had 4 total 1st rounders last year and I thought we had better talent leaving with Anderson, OJ, Allen, Foster, Cam, Humphrey, Dalvin. I thought Tim Williams would have the tools the teams in the league wanted but not so much. He didn't have the stats but I thought would have the tools. So you never know.

Not four but three will. Minkah, Harrison and Ridley.

On a serious note, which one(s) of these mock drafts are accurate? It seems to be more of a guessing game than anything.

WalterFootball has Bama with four. CBS has one. The two names I keep seeing pop up are Evans and Payne.

(Who saw Carpenter getting a first round nod?)

Tony Brown 3rd round and Levi Wallace undrafted free agent. Say what?

I'm sure there will be plenty of NFL teams that see Brown's speed and potential (that he never came close to here) and take a shot at him in round 3-5 just because what COULD be if ever pulls his head out of his ass and decides to give a shit and not acting like a child whenever he gets mad. Wallace has all the heart and effort but he just doesn't have the talent of 90% of NFL cornerbacks.

I agree, some head scratchers in there. Tony Brown will be 1 of those combine pro bowlers. He will look great in shorts / t-shirt and probably put up impressive testing numbers and some team's scouts/GM will forget what he looked like in coverage or tackling.

Name the best play of Tony Brown's 4 years? I will be back on Saturday for the review. I recall one interception this season or was it last? He always shows up just before the official blows the whistle. He looks the part but for sure. He has zero football savvy. Then again that is just me.

Brown, Had a great tackle on a kickoff two year back! I just don't rememeber which game it was? That the year he didn't play in the playoff because of something he done?

Against LSU. Levelled Guice on a kick off return before immediately going into halftime.

I too don't recall another impressive play at all by him. Oh ... there was a good hit he made on Watson in last year's title game. And I'm not talking about the early 4th down stop he made on Gallman ... you know when Brown began celebrating prematurely as Gallman retained his balance to nearly convert. :eyeroll:

So that's two impressive plays I've ever seen him make. I could see him playing half-back.
That the year he didn't play in the playoff because of something he done?
yes
