Alabama redshirt senior tight end Giles Amos has entered the NCAA transfer portal, BamaOnLine has confirmed. Matt Zenitz of AL.com was first to report the portal move.

Amos earned a scholarship from head coach Nick Saban prior to the Crimson Tide’s 2019-20 season after playing as a walk-on his first three years in the program. The Perry, Ga., native played in nine games and caught one pass for five yards against New Mexico State. A fifth-year senior, Amos will be immediately eligible at his next stop as a graduate transfer.

Affectionately known as ā€œTrailer Park Jesus,ā€ Amos was popular among his UA teammates.

ā€œI couldn't be happier for any guy,ā€ veteran tight end Miller Forristall said. ā€œHe came in my freshman year with me and I've gotten to be great friends with him. And to see him receive a scholarship, that meant the world to everybody in the room. It was awesome.ā€

Amos’ assumed departure leaves Alabama with five scholarship tight ends for the spring, which has been suspended through at least April 15 due to the coronavirus. The Tide will add two tight ends to the fold in the summer in North Carolina transfer Carl Tucker and 2020 signee Caden Clark, but the position is still one of its thinnest in terms of game experience.

Established in October of 2018, the NCAA’s transfer portal now allows collegiate student-athletes to merely enter their name into an online database and wait for collegiate teams to contact them. It is also worth noting that players can withdraw their names from the portal, too.

So far, Alabama has lost two scholarship players to transfer this offseason in running back Jerome Ford (Cincinnati) and offensive tackle Scott Lashley (Mississippi State). Cornerback Scooby Carter is also in the transfer portal but has not yet announced a transfer school.
