It’s been awhile since I brought this up but why for the love of Pete ,doesn’t Bama play Jacksonville St., UAB, Troy, South Alabama and North Alabama on a rotating basis? I am so tired of seeng Mercer and so many of these lower tiered schools come to Tuscaloosa for a payout game. Personally, I would rather see us have ONE game a year where we play the above mentioned schools. Granted South Florida has given us fits the last two years. Yes, it’s a soapbox but one I am willing to stand on today and in the future.

Mike,
As a 2 time graduate of UAB, let me be the 1st to say PISS ON UAB!
I get so tried of their whining about how they are just as good as Alabama etc….
Now, the other schools that you mentioned, I’m ok with.

I think it's a way of thinking that is starting to (literally in some cases) die out. For the foreseeable future, Bama vs. UAB in football or basketball is going to be a non-starter in part because they fall under the same system and there's also some muddy politics that linger. I could see a day down the road where Bama would play JSU or Samford for example. Troy and USA? Not as certain, but maybe. The best way for those other schools to make it happen is to basically agree to take less money for the game, and probably significantly so, than schools like Western Carolina, Mercer, Chattanooga, etc. I think it's also fair to say that the underlying notion that Bama does not want to lose to and/or financially build up an instate school also still holds water...

Anybody know what kind of a payout UAB, Jax State or other schools would want? There isn’t going to be a home-and-home with them. Is strength of schedule important? If so, don’t play tier 2 schools

It would depend on the school and stuff like travel situations, but as an example, JSU got $1.3 million from South Carolina last season, $1 million from Louisville this season. UAB got $1.9 million from UGA last season and $1.6 from Arkansas this season.

Those paydays covered transportation and lodging. Both would be a lot cheaper to play Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I’m all for helping the little guy, but if the SEC goes to nine games, plus the two games scheduled with major OoC players (Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Florida State, West Virginia, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, Boston College), that final game on a 12-game schedule will be prime for somebody to get a payday.

On that note, Charleston Southern is getting 450K playing at FSU this weekend. But, perspective...

It cost over 200K to power up the coliseum in Charlotte for a night. That payout they are getting from FSU will cover their power/salaries for the basketball season; or for the next football season (two night games, I believe, maybe three.)

It was explained to me this way. It is a no win situation for Alabama. Those schools look up to Alabama. We are supposed to beat the little brother. But if little brother some how beat Alabama?!? Alabama gains nothing, can lose the title of best football team in Alabama, lose money, and recruits.

like @TerryP said, out of state revenue. UAB won’t be spending a dime in Tuscaloosa nor their 75 fans to come to Tuscaloosa for an ass whipping. They would stay in B’ham on Friday night, load the buses up the next morning and make the trip down I-20. I’d put Samford on the rotation before UAB.

You can just as easily be describing the game with the barn....
