The missed call at the end was a kick in the balls after having that happen a few years ago in the same gym but that isn't what cost us this game. First of all Vandy started hitting shots from outside which they haven't done all year. Second the moving screen their guy was setting at the top was forcing the switch to our big on their quickest guy and he spent the night at the free throw line. Some of that is on us, we switched to a pressure 2-3 or a 3-2 and it was working.. I don't know why we came out of it after two posessions and allowed them to continue to dictate the action with an illegal screen. Lastly on offense, we needed to put Ingram and "three point John" on the same side and let Ingram drive to the bucket and keep getting fouled. He has a great ability to get to the line and the officials seemed quick to call it on the other end. That either keeps Petty's defender from crashing to help because they were denying him the ball or if they sag to help out with the drive he can finally get an open look.
As far as Petty, he needs to develop his game past shooting three pointers, he needs to improve his ball handling and his ability to drive to the bucket. In the short term we need to do more to set screens for him to get him open shots. I know he prefers the kickout shot to the curl but it's in his head and with out us pounding it down low and forcing double teams.. people are looking for the drive and kick to him. It resulted in at least 4 or 5 turnovers last night.
That one hurt last night. Very winnable road game and there just aren't many of those in our conference this year. I think we are looking at the NIT unless we get very lucky or improve a bunch. Yes we played a brutal schedule but we haven't won any of the big games we scheduled and Oklahoma doesn't look like one we can win either.
