Alabama looking into adding grad transfer kicker

Alabama may soon add some more competition for its starting kicker job.

The Crimson Tide is looking into Temple graduate transfer Austin Jones, who will visit Alabama this weekend, his high school coach, Andy Johnson, told AL.com.

Jones was widely regarded as one of the top kickers in the American Athletic Conference before suffering an ACL injury midway through the 2016 season. While he was recovered for this past season, Temple went with a younger kicker who had kicked well enough in 2016 after Jones got hurt that he earned second-team all-conference recognition.

So Jones decided to leave Temple following the season and Alabama is one of the primary schools being considered as a transfer option.

LSU and Tulane are among the other schools that have been in contact.

"He just wants an opportunity to kick," Johnson said.

Jones had been Temple's kicker since his freshman year prior to suffering the injury.

The Florida native has made at least 80 percent of his field goals each of the last three seasons, including 82.1 percent in 2015 (23 of 28) and 83.3 percent in 2016 before getting hurt (10 of 12).

Alabama has been in contact since last week after Jones participated in some sort of kicking camp, Johnson said.

Though the Tide hasn't offered a scholarship yet, Jones would be open to transferring to Alabama even if he has to be a walk-on, Johnson said.

If he does land with the Tide, he would compete with redshirt freshman Joseph Bulovas for the kicker job vacated by Andy Pappanastos.

Signed a kicker a few years back...highest rated that year.....and he was terrible...
Took a kicker ..grad transfer.. from another SEC school...terrible
Had a commitment from the #1 kicker and he backed out n went to Florida..
...and now we are getting a kicker from a American Conference school who wasnt their first team kicker...
I feel faint!!!!! IMG_2069.JPG

Recruiting makes for some interesting dynamics. We went all in on Adam Griffin and lost Daniel Carlson and probably Eddie Pineiro. By extension, we lost Daniel's little brother to the barn. Just hope the next Carlson doesn't leave us with 4 more years of what if.

saw on another board that the kicker at Hoover (2019) is supposed to be beast PK and P (4.71 hang time 49+ypk) has offers from LsU and the Fightin' Flag Planting/crotch grabbers.
with Bulovas not able to get kicks passed the LOS but with very strong kick offs... and the grad transfer... and who knows if the Delong kid will be able to punt are not.. .I vote we use another scholly for the Hoover kid... cant be worse than Cade Foster or Adam Griffin

How many time did they speak about Carlson whole family being Bama grads? Coaches wanted him to walk on, as soon as he talk with the barner he was quickly taking! Barners are ROTFLAO!!
