Last month, Foster was notified that his urine sample obtained in Indianapolis during the combine was reported as dilute. Based on the provisions of the NFL's policy and program for substances of abuse, "this will be treated like a positive test."

In discussing his trying few months, Foster disclosed the test results to NFL.com because, he says, "This is something that's going to get out. I don't make excuses. I'm a real dude. I try to be a good person. ... I just hope the coaches understand and that's all I can hope and pray for." Foster has already been on the phone talking with teams telling them himself.

As for why the test came back dilute, Foster explained in detail. He said he was sick before the combine. He was throwing up, had diarrhea, couldn't keep anything down and was cramping. One adviser offered to have a doctor put him on IVs to hydrate, but he didn't want that. He saw a doctor, got some medication and started hydrating himself.

Foster believes it was food poisoning.

"I couldn't eat much, but I had to drink water and Gatorade," said Foster, who began the process as the consensus top linebacker based on his game tape and measurables. "Then a few coaches said something about me being too light. And I'm a coach-pleaser. I don't care what everybody thinks, but I care what coaches think. So I drank and ate as much as I could without throwing up. Then I went in there, drinking and drinking water, trying to flush out my system from whatever was making me sick and trying to keep my weight up and took the test."

The result was the diluted test.

While I have been told, too much water and clear piss comes back as a positive test, I'm a believer in him smoking pot and getting caught. Just being realistic here. My apologies if I'm wrong, but things I've heard through the years make me think I'm correct.

This guy is something else. One of my non bama fan friends texted me today "McClain 2.0". I disagree because I think McClain had legitimate mental health issues... Rueben is just wild and apparently dumb.

No doubt there is bust potential. Has anyone ever played himself worse at the combine? I mean...

Good news is he could drop to the Broncos at 20. Bad news is he may drop to the Broncos at 20

Man guys, a lotta hatin' going on for Reuben.

Let's don't EXPECT that he uses drugs - let's think the best of him, hope the best for him. I DON'T believe he will get the benefit of the doubt with NFL teams, however. I will say that I think he's a can't miss LB in the NFL

The explanation makes sense for the most part. The claim that he was ā€œtrying to flush out my system from whatever was making me sickā€ feels a bit like a Freudian slip, since the rule regarding diluted sample arises from the concern that people will consume excess water in an effort to flush evidence of banned substances from his system.

Foster doesn’t know what any of this will mean to his draft stock, but he embraces the possibility that he’ll slide.

ā€œIf it’s first round, second round, whoever takes me will get a good football player and an All-Pro,ā€ Foster said. ā€œI hope I go on Thursday, but I can’t control that.ā€

He also has no qualms about being placed in the drug-testing program. Which is good, because he will be.

And that’s the primary risk that a team will be taking in accepting his version as true. If he’s instead saying what he has to say to salvage his draft status, teams need to be sure that he will consistently choose football over whatever substance may have been in his system once he knows he’ll be tested on a regular basis.

After all, he knew he’d be tested at the Scouting Combine, and he failed the test anyway. If the dilution was indeed the result of an effort to conceal banned substances and not something that happened as he tried to deal with an illness, it’s fair to worry that he’ll fail more tests.

Look no further than Aldon Smith, Josh Gordon, and Pacman Jones to know if you can play, you'll get drafted and play. The NFL tries to look like hardasses, bht they are the world's worst when it comes to sweeping under the rug. Hence why I'm not a fan outside the Falcons and our Alabama boys.
