Like you I don't have a strong opinion one way or another about when it's announced. It's not news: it's ceremonial. It's an award. After all, those leaders chosen are part of the leadership council already. It's not like the team doesn't know leaders.
I have an opinion about part of your opinion. People will say it's a strong opinion but that's meant to emphasize the wisdom behind the astute nature of the opinion. In the end, it'll be a compliment.
Officially naming the faces of the program at this time? It fits perfectly with how you describe how the staff is building the roster.
He's unique because of his situation. Parker is a guy that worked on building relationships when he got to town and because of his story he instantly became a teacher.
Ty has been through four OC's. The players have commented on it...he's "ground it out." (Stacey, a ""needle mover when you follow rosters) He's earned the role.
Lawson is ... I hate using the term repeat, but he was a 'captain' in the winter clearinghouse.
Overton is where you can get an opinion. I thought he was on and off again last season and the old "bringing it every play" is what he needs this fall. But, he may be the best example of why you are a fan of captains being named, now.
Their leadership roles have already been established because of the effort to build strong relationships inside the building. If that's successful we have a program that's introducing a group of four guys and saying, "This is Alabama football: 202_."
@BamaFan334 this also goes back to what we were talking about this week; how some things about this fall have lost their luster while others have been "needle movers."
I don't know how many times we've mentioned the attitude, cohesiveness (add a bunch of more words if you want) in the locker room...different things around the same subject being pointed out before the first bead of sweat was broke before spring camp. Despite the lack of doubt when it was being heard about and we were taking about, and in spite of somethings being
little tid-bits, Brandon's "summation of where they are" has all those little bullet points.
I feel I've got a pretty good idea of what they are going to look like. Barring something unforeseen happening that's what I want...to see the potential and it's the potential to make a title run.
Conversely, among the few things we really haven't talked about is one of the things that could come back to bite this team in the ass. Is the question legitimate.
Do we know any more about the kicking game than we did before spring camp? There's some hyperbole there...truth as well.
