šŸˆ Alabama Football: Sims, Coker and the disturbing underlying tone of the QB battle

The premise of the Bill Walsh west coast offense is SHORT, timed passing. Can you Say Joe Montana and Steve young? CLK is running this offense in Tuscaloosa (no it didn't freeze over). The formations and terminology are different than the previous OC under CNS, although we do still run the ball. With all that being said, as of yesterday, Blake Smith is running that offense better right now, plain and simple. He has a better grasp of the offense, throws a nice short pass and can scramble (running back at onetime) when needed. Coker is still learning the offense, throws a better deep pass and can run if he has to at times. Who knows what will happen a week or a month from now? Right now, I do not see a controversy at QB except with some fans wanting one to exist. I have 100% confidence CNS and CLK will play the person they think will give us the best chance to win. It may be 1 QB or it could be 2.

The race thing? Some folks have mentioned it but I don't think it's an issue .. What do you think?

Trust me, I have this one friend who gives me shit for being a Bama fan .. I remember telling you guys when we got into an argument, and he was claiming that Alabama doesn't recruit or start black QBs (despite evidence to the contrary) ..

Here's how I see it. Coker got all the hype. He was called a Heisman candidate early on by some. I mean jesus kid hadn't taken a snap in Crimson yet and people were ready to name him a god. Nothing on Coker, of course, but that seemed like an unfair amount of pressure to put on both Coker and Sims. I think Sims won the competition fair and square from the sounds of it, but I think both QBs have pros and cons over each other. Together they would be a fantastic QB. But we gotta work with what we have. I imagine Kiffin can adjust the offense, and certain plays, to match their strengths. But I think Sims is our guy, for now.

I am confident in either QB leading us at this point, come injury or whatnot *knocks on wood*

Yeah I truly think race was not a factor in this discussion. I truly think Saban and co. went who they believe is the best guy for the job. And I truly believe the vast majority of Alabama fans support the coaches and whoever is our starting QB, regardless of race. We want to win!

I also think this article's title is total clickbait. Race was not mentioned in the article at all. It wasn't even implied. But the only "disturbing" thing I have heard re: the QB thing is race, so I assume we are to assume that is what the author implied.

Walter Lewis was Alabama's QB under Bear Bryant, and Bear's last season was 1982----thirty two years ago. Andrew Zow was Bama's QB at one time. And the Tide recruited Jameis Winston. Seriously, how could anybody think race is an issue for QB at the Capstone? :eyeroll:

My friend puts his blinders on to SEC teams lol .. He prefers Auburn cuz his dad went to Tuskegee. As if Auburn is a shining beacon of racial equality ..

Either way, I seriously don't get the feeling race played any role in Saban and co.'s decision. And it shouldn't affect anyone's perception of the QB competition, either.

Remind your friend about Dismukes' outburst...

Of course race hasn't played any role. Your friend is an idiot.

The bottom line here is some people love to stir up controversy and some people just love to cause trouble and some people hate us because we are Alabama. Folks theres nothing to see here unless of course you want to be a part of a conspiracy theory. Now ran along folks there's nothing to see here. Does it really matter what SDS has to say about anything?I don't think so.

i'm not sure that he really has a staronger arm than Blake. Blake puts a lot of zip on the ball when he wants to. Accuracy appears to be a bit more of a problem for both of them than arm strength.

Let's just ride this screen machine as long as we can, boys. Enjoy it!

I dont think you read the article. SDS wasnt weaving some form of a conspiracy theory, they were pointing out that some FANS are not giving Sims a chance for pretty much no reason. There was no one single mention of a suggestion that the coaches have felt that way, actually the opposite.

The West Coast offense is predicated around quick rhythm throws. It isn't based on the "chuck it deep" 9-10 times like the old Raiders offense! Coach Homer Smith used to tell us that if you must throw a ball OVER 42 yards in the air, then you have waited to long to throw it. Arm strength is overrated!! I agree with Coach Saban 100% when he replied to a question Eli asked Saturday after the game. Fans that are choosing sides in the QB competition, HE DOESN"T CARE WHAT YOU THINK!! I trust that our coaches are going to go with the guy that gives us the best chance to win the game. It very well could mean rotating the guys by quarters or by games. I don't care how they do it, JUST WIN BABY!!!

:agree:

I believe race is what this asshole is referring to and I also believe like Rick said "once they put on that uni crimson is all I see". I, like others, trust the judgement of CNS because he has a proven track record and has earned my trust, not that he cares about that. Just win baby.
