Better than anticipated was Nick Saban's assessment of Saturday's first scrimmage of the Alabama spring routine.Quarterback AJ McCarron didn't expect it to go poorly from the beginning.
And linebacker Nico Johnson celebrated the end of Crimson Tide defense's scrimmage slump.
Overall, there weren't many complaints from those who saw and participated in the first run-through at full speed.
McCarron especially wasn't griping about his opportunities. He threw 43 times, completed 25 including three touchdowns and an interception.
"I don't think any quarterback wants to hand the ball off that much," McCarron said. "It doesn't matter if I throw it five times or 45 times. I don't really care. I just want to win. As long as we win, I'm happy."
Injuries factored largely into both phases of offensive production but also could explain the number of passes thrown (45 to 38 runs according to provided stats). A toe injury shelved starting running back Eddie Lacy for the entire spring and reserve Blake Sims missed the last two weeks with an injured hip.
