Bama News

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 11/11 Alabama returns to the friendly confines of Coleman Coliseum where it will host the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network. It will mark the only meeting between the teams during the regular season.

Saturday's game will be the 149th meeting on the hardwood between the two schools, which is the seventh-most games UA has played against any one opponent. The Crimson Tide owns a 96-52 lead in the series, with the 96 victories ranking fifth in program history.

Most recently, the Crimson Tide returned to its winning ways when it captured a hard-fought 81-78 victory at South Carolina last Tuesday. After taking an eight-point lead with 3:37 remaining, Alabama was able to stave off a furious Gamecocks' rally by knocking down 5-of-6 free throws and making key defensive stops down the stretch to seal the victory

The Broadcast

  • Saturday's game will be available on SEC Network with Kevin Fitzgerald (play-by-play) and Dane Bradshaw (analyst) on the call.
  • The radio broadcast can be heard on the Crimson Tide Sports Network with Chris Stewart (play-by-play), Bryan Passink (analyst) and Roger Hoover (sideline) on the call. The pregame show will begin one hour prior to tipoff.
Team Notes

  • According to the Ken Pomeroy ratings (as of 2/11), Alabama owns the nation's top-ranked defense entering its contest vs. Georgia. Last year, the Tide was rated by the same site at No. 114 in the category. Alabama is also No. 35 in offensive efficiency, making it one of 14 teams in the country to rank in the top 35 in both offense and defense.
  • Forward Herbert Jones is one of 30 players across the nation who was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team. Additionally, he was selected to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Midseason Watch List. Only five other players across the country joins Jones as players who were named to both Watch Lists (Charles Bassey, Western Kentucky; Jared Butler, Baylor; Justin Champagnie, Pitt; Davion Mitchell, Baylor and Evan Mobley, USC).
  • John Petty Jr. already holds the program's all-time record for three-pointers made in a career with 286, 23 more than the former record holder Brian Williams (263 from 1996-99). With his next three-point attempt, Petty will also break the program record for threes attempted in a career which is also held by Williams (738).
  • Alabama enters the game with an 11-1 record against league competition which is the second-best start in SEC play in program history. Only the famed Rocket 8 1955-56 team that finished the conference season with a perfect 14-0 record has a better start. The Tide owns a three-game lead in the loss column with six games remaining. UA will need to win three more games to clinch at least a tie and four more to earn the outright regular season title.
  • In SEC games only, UA's defense is the most efficient in the SEC, ranking first in field goal percentage defense (.382), three-point field goal percentage defense (.250) and defensive rebounds (29.6), tied for first in steals (9.2) and is third in scoring defense (68.8). Offensively, UA leads the league in scoring offense (82.3), scoring margin (+13.6), three-point shooting (.392) and threes made per game (11.6).
  • Alabama has held 10 of its 12 league opponents to under 30 percent shooting from beyond the arc in SEC play. Eight of those teams shot under 24 percent from deep including three consecutive. As a result, the Crimson Tide currently leads the SEC in three-point field goal percentage defense in league play (.250).
  • The Tide owns a record of 12-1 this season when knocking down at least 10 three-pointers in a game, with the lone loss coming at then-No. 24 Oklahoma (went 10-of-28 in the 66-61 loss). Furthermore, Alabama boasts a perfect 11-0 record when it attempts at least 30 threes in a contest
  • There are several other factors to look for which could decide the outcome during a game this season. Alabama owns a 14-0 record when leading at halftime, is 13-0 on the year when shooting 40 percent or better in a game and owns a 13-0 mark when reaching at least 80 points in a contest.

No. 11 Alabama, leading the Southeastern Conference men’s basketball race, returns home Saturday (2:30 p.m. SEC Network) to face Georgia.

The Bulldogs had won three straight SEC games before falling to No. 16 Tennessee 89-81 on Wednesday.

Frontcourt injuries piling up

With redshirt freshman forward Juwan Gary out against Georgia, and possibly longer due to a shoulder injury, coach Nate Oats said the Crimson Tide frontcourt is “decimated” in terms of depth.

Alabama (16-5, 11-1 SEC) lost 6-foot-11 forward Alex Tchikou in the preseason and has been without 6-10 Jordan Bruner for over a month. Senior Alex Reese has been a stronger inside presence in Bruner’s absence and 6-7 James Rojas, who was sidelined for two weeks with an undisclosed illness, played with more energy in the 81-78 win at South Carolina on Tuesday.

While Oats acknowledges that senior Herb Jones could use extra rest for his sore back, the depth situation requires Jones to play. Alabama might also look for extra minutes from freshmen Darius Miles and Keon Ambrose-Hylton, who have seen some spot duty this season.

“We’re trying to win a conference championship so we have to play everyone who can help us,” Oats said.

Georgia is a guard-oriented team

While 6-8 center Toumani Camara gives coach Tom Crean a viable post presence, averaging 12.8 points and nine rebounds in the last four game, the Bulldogs (12-7, 5-7) are built around the perimeter, especially Sahvir Wheeler, Justin Kier and freshman K.D. Johnson.

Wheeler is explosive but turnoverprone, part of the reason that Georgia is 13th in the SEC in turnover percentage. Johnson, a 6-3 freshman, missed the first 10 games due to an NCAA eligibility issue but has averaged 13 points a game since being cleared, including a 22point effort at Tennessee.

Alabama has some cushion

With six regular-season games remaining, Alabama is three games up in the loss column on five pursuing teams: Tennessee, Arkansas and LSU at 7-4 and Florida and Missouri each at 6-4.

The Crimson Tide has not won a regular- season SEC title since 2001-02. The 11 league wins are the most since 2013 when Alabama finished 12-6 in SEC play but were left out of the NCAA Tournament field. The 2013 team was 9-0 at home in SEC play, while the current Alabama team is 6-0 in SEC home games with three games (Georgia, Vanderbilt and Auburn) remaining at Coleman Coliseum.

Bama up 51-38 at half. Herb looks better, moving better. Had a great 1st half... 17 points, 3-4 from 3. Still some silly turnovers on offense, but really good ball movement and shooting it well. Team is 11-17 from 3 (UGA is 1-10). UGA is not a good team, but they play hard. The Bulldogs are 13-13 from the FT line, which is keeping them in the game.

Much better on the offensive end so far. More shots are falling. D is playing well and with good effort. Only complaint so far would be the turnovers as was mentioned by @Brandon Van de Graaff. Turnovers have been a problem for a few games. When the offense is hitting shots it creates enough margin to not matter but that is not going to always be the case.

Good win. Offense got back in gear. BTW when the kid dunked the ball how was there not a foul there?
Hit his head hard on the court. That could have been really bad.

Roll Tide!!! Keep working to get the offense back in gear and then we can talk about high seeds.

Another nice win! Good to see the offense come alive, hopefully that carries over. 5 players with 13+. The defense got sleepy more than it should have, but I'm not too concerned about that. You could see UGA was tired out from the pace. Was really good to see Herb playing/moving better. Hopefully that game gets Quinnerly and Primo (who has been a little hurt also) going again too. They combined to go 7-8 from 3. The Miles dunk in the final minute was delightful. At Texas A&M on Wednesday night if it's not postponed/canceled because of the bat flu. Roll Tide, you guys....

Anybody else like the fire and emotion from the white boy #15 on our team in mop up duty? That guy was mad a few times and super animated. LOL Got me laughing. Is he a walk-on and the proverbial GPA influencer?

I hope that's the way they do it. My Grandson is in the final mix for a walk-on spot on the football team as a Grad transfer. He graduated in three years on the Deans List at Samford.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 11/11 Alabama men’s basketball team set a program record for points in an SEC game and scored the second-most points in a game in school history in its 115-82 victory over Georgia on Saturday afternoon inside Coleman Coliseum. The Crimson Tide shot season highs of 64.3 percent from the field (36-of-56), 60.0 percent from three-point range (18-of-30) and 83.3 percent (25-of-30) from the charity stripe en route to the team’s largest margin of victory on the year (33 points).

The win marked the Crimson Tide’s 13th win in its last 15 games as UA improved to 17-5 overall and 12-1 in Southeastern Conference play – the second-best start in league play in school history.

Forward Herbert Jones led five players in double figures with a career-high 21 points and led the team with five rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Freshman Joshua Primo scored 19 points – all of which came in the second half – while guard Jaden Shackelford added 18. Guards Jahvon Quinerly (16) and John Petty Jr. (13) also reached double figures for the Crimson Tide.

Georgia (12-8, 5-8 SEC) was led by K.D. Johnson’s 24 points and Sahvir Wheeler added 16 for the Bulldogs.

Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments

“It’s good to finally see the ball go in again. It’s good to see Herb Jones a lot closer to 100 percent. He’s still not quite there, but man, did he look better. That makes our offense a whole lot better when Herb is playing explosive like he was. Defensively, we weren’t as good as we wanted to be, but that’s a good offensive team. They didn’t shoot it particularly well, which obviously helped us. We shot it well. We got to the free throw line and made free throws. We made threes. Outside of the turnovers on offense, I thought our offense was pretty good. They’re a really good offensive rebounding team. We held them to 28 percent offensive rebounding rate, which is lower than their average by a lot. We have some work to do. I’m really happy for the guys. We had 115 [points], which is an SEC record for points in a game. Darius’ (Miles) dunk he put down at the end. We know how talented that kid is. We’ve been trying to get him to put it all together, so I was really happy to see him be able to do that. I thought a lot of guys shot the ball well. It’s a feel-good win, but we definitely have some work to do on the defensive side of it.”
