I think AJ got out of this trade great! he don't need any part of Cleveland right now!

During the NFL offseason, the rumor of day often involved which quarterback-needy team had made a play to obtain the two backup QBs lined up squarely in speculation's sights -- Jimmy Garoppolo of the New England Patriots and AJ McCarron of the Cincinnati Bengals.

In the end, neither quarterback changed teams -- until Monday night.

With the NFL trade deadline approaching at 3 p.m. CDT Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers sent a second-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft to the Patriots for Garoppolo. But the deadline has now passed, and McCarron remains the backup to Andy Dalton in Cincinnati.

But it wasn't from lack of trying, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Schefter reported that the Bengals and Cleveland Browns worked out a trade for McCarron with five minutes left before the deadline. While the Bengals forwarded the trade information to the NFL office before the deadline, the Browns did not, and the league would not allow the deal to go through.

Marcell Dareus on trade: 'It feels good to be wanted'

Former Alabama standout Marcell Dareus started practice on Monday with a different NFL team after the Buffalo Bills traded him on Friday to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cleveland coach Hue Jackson had pushed the Browns' front office to swing a deal for Garoppolo or McCarron during the offseason. Jackson had worked with McCarron as the Bengals' offensive coordinator before taking the Cleveland job in 2016.

The Browns didn't get either quarterback and have an 0-8 record in 2017 with rookie DeShone Kizer making seven starts under center and second-year QB Kevin Hogan getting the other.

Meanwhile, McCarron has taken three snaps for Cincinnati this season -- one more play than he had in 2016.

McCarron joined Cincinnati as a fifth-round choice in the 2014 NFL Draft. The former Alabama star didn't play during his rookie season (not even in the preseason) as he spent most of the year getting over a shoulder ailment.

McCarron had appeared in mop-up roles in three Cincinnati wins earlier in the 2015 when Dalton suffered a broken thumb against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 13, 2015. McCarron entered that game and spent the rest of the season as the Bengals' quarterback.

McCarron helped Cincinnati win two of its final three regular-season games (with the loss coming to eventual Super Bowl 50 champ Denver in overtime) to wrap up the AFC North title. In his three regular-season starts, McCarron completed 54-of-83 passes for 552 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.

In the playoffs, McCarron rallied Cincinnati from a 15-0 deficit to a 16-15 lead over Pittsburgh with less than two minutes to play with three straight scoring drives in the fourth quarter. A fumble and a meltdown by the Bengals' defense kept Cincinnati from picking up its first postseason victory since 1990 as the Steelers came back for an 18-16 win.

AJ McCarron may really want to go play for the Cleveland Browns.

In the days after a botched trade attempt between McCarron’s Cincinnati Bengals and the winless Browns leaked after the NFL trade deadline passed, it appears as though McCarron is attempting to accelerate his path to unrestricted free agency.

The former Alabama star is set to be a restricted free agent after the 2017 season, but a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefterreveals that McCarron has filed a grievance against the Bengals in hopes of becoming an unrestricted free agent instead.

The change in designation would eliminate the need for the Browns to compensate the Bengals if they do sign McCarron to be their quarterback of the future.

McCarron’s complaint reportedly stems from a shoulder injury during his rookie season in 2014. Per Schefter:

In McCarron’s opinion, he was healthy enough to come off the NFI list during training camp, which would have counted his rookie season toward his free agency. But Cincinnati didn’t add McCarron to its active roster until Dec. 9, which was too late for him to accrue a season toward his free agency.

If McCarron was considered a restricted free agent, the Browns would again have to attempt to trade for his rights. The ruling, which will come from an arbitrator, is expected to come at some point during the winter, per Schefter’s report.

As things stand, McCarron still finds himself at No. 2 on the Bengals quarterback depth chart behind starter Andy Dalton.
