Awarding points for just breaking the plane of the goal line. I wish the ball carrier / receiver had to be in the endzone with the ball under control before the play could be deemed a touchdown / extra point.

What's your opinion?

Nah, I like it the way it is personally. If you have possession of it in the end zone it should be a touchdown. Otherwise what happens if a player walks in untouched? Should you have to take a knee to score a TD?

I can understand where you're coming from, Wayne. While I don't mind the ball breaking the plane for a touchdown, I've never been able to quite understand why it's different for a ball carrier to extend the ball beyond the first down marker and it not be ruled a first, but it's ruled a touchdown.

@BamaCore if the player has possession of the ball in the endzone it would be a TD, regardless. What I want to eliminate is plays like "Bo over the top" where he broke the plane but the first thing that hit the ground was his ass on the 3 yard line after he was hit.

I know we have benefited as much as anyone by just breaking the plane, like just last night for example, but I wish it was like any other place on the field. Thanks for your opinion.

In the early days, and deriving from rugby, you had to touch the ball down. The place where the ball was touched down determined from what angle and where the ensuing kick (now extra point), or goal, was kicked. Hence the name.

Everyone has to live by the same rules, now, so it doesn't really bother me. Still, it would seem more meaningful is you had to get the whole ball across or something more challenging.
