šŸŒŽ A Donated Air Force One

The donated 747 story is pretty interesting. Trump apparently wants it for his later years. It's impossible to convert that equipment to a fully functioning presidential conveyance during his term, and more expensive than doing it from scratch.

Trump doesn’t get to keep the plane. And whatever it costs to build a new Air Force One, the U.S. can now subtract $400 million.

Not donated to trump, it was a gift for the US.
From what I read, it will go to his presidential library following his term, which means his personal use. Why spend an incredible amount of money to transform equipment to Air Force One and only get - at most - two years' use? Plus, presidential libraries are under the control of the former president's "foundation". The Clintons perfected that money play.

There is no way to make this look good. An advance $400 million contribution to his presidential library.

It will cost more to convert it to a true Air Force One than to start from scratch. Now, if he just wants an upgrade over that old 757 for post-presidency personal use, then that's another matter.
How much have they spent on the Boeing that was commissioned some seven or eight year ago? I understand it's three years or so late.

I don't know what the cost is, but still waiting on part to come in! I'm just wondering how it going into his Presidential Library?
I haven't read a lot. From what little I've read it's a gift to DoD, it'll then be decommissioned when he leaves the WH and put in his library. At Reagan's you can walk through his as well as Marine One that LJB commishioned.

I don’t care what a person’s political leanings are there can’t be anybody that think this is a good idea.
Tim nailed it in his first sentence, "pretty interesting."

I'm still weighing arguments. IE: "Yeah why wouldn't we accept a gift from a government that funds Hamas!" Sarcasm there, of course.

We've agreed the government has funded both sides of the conflicts in the middle East. But with this plane, we need to draw a line? There's something about the rational there that leaves me shaking my head a bit. If people believe a plane would influence POTUS and decisions regarding Qatar?

We're seeing investments coming in already I saw a blurb a few minutes about about Qatar buying a lot of jets from Boeing.

I can also see the arguments of how accepting a gift like this can be diplomatic "hand shake." Their culture is one that's known to make grand gestures.

I also see how it can be viewed as a move for influence. To avoid that appearance we'd all want to up front, right? Transparency is a word tossed around a lot...this seems pretty clear. It's just how you choose to view it...

That said. I don't know how the Constitution reads here. I don't believe a gift to the DoD is unconstitutional.

I've planned on looking at some International news tomorrow morning just to see how it's being received: likely start with Al Jazeera.

In reality, by the time the US gets the plane, strips it, converts it and makes it available to a President, we’ll be halfway through 48’s first term.

Hillary had to pay for a necklace that she received as a gift, but this bozo can accept an airplane and everything is fine?

And based on what I've read the new Boeing order under his last time in office still won't be ready.

I'm also entertaining the idea this is like buying a new car. You go to the Honda dealership and they tell you your new sedan won't be available until next month. So, you head down to Acura and take a test drive. Honda sees what you are considering and it lights a fire under their asses.

Could it be the same with Boeing and the new jet from Qatar? A "sly" way of getting Boeing to get off their collective asses and get the job done (that's already pretty damn late.)

Just musing...

The plane to the Dod.
The necklace to Hillary.

I'm not seeing the comparison.

FWIW, it would seem to me that you'd realize continuing to throw out childish names is about like dancing after stopping an 18 yard gain when it was 3rd and 17.

It brings a question to mind. How can pronouns, and their use, be considered prejudicial but adjectives are left alone?

I'm going to go with what you are saying here for a minute. Based on "bozo..."
  • Biden is a Bozo. The female bust from Liberia.
  • Obama is a Bozo for the saber and ball Xi Jiping gave him.
  • Clinton, Bozo. Putin and his cognac.
  • Hillary, Bozo. The diamonds and rubies from Saudi.
This was 2019.

The U.S. General Services Administration said the gifts were accepted to avoid awkward moments. I pointed to "grand gestures" earlier. I see a definite comparison here EXCEPT the plane is going to the DoD.

The plane is going to his Presidential library. ā€œTrump will use the aircraft as his presidential plane until shortly before he leaves office in January 2029, when ownership will be transferred to the foundation overseeing his yet-to-be-built presidential library.ā€- Wall Street Journal. So, it’s a gift directly to him not to the country.

Obama didn’t keep the gift. Hillary PAID for the necklace that she kept. Trump isn’t paying anything. Comparing those gifts to a 400 million is damn laughable.
