With Universityof Georgia and Georgia Tech games tied up elsewhere on the radio dial, 92.9/TheGame has taken the unusual step of becoming the local affiliate station for afootball team out of state: in this case, the University of Alabama CrimsonTide.
While there'sno questioning the track record of the Tide (15 national championships, including three in the past four years), this is Bulldog country. It's kind oflike a Boston sports station airing Yankee games.
To date, sincethe Game came aboard last fall, it has struggled to find an audience, despiteits super-powerful signal compared to its rivals. Its daytime lineup expertiseseems to lean more towards pro sports than college football. And it recentlylanded a deal to be the flagship station of the Atlanta Hawks, so probasketball will always get favored treatment.
But the bottomline is college football is too important to ignore in the South. So rollingwith the Tide is a way for the Game to go deep into the SEC - even if the movealienates Dawg fans.
Then again, itnever hurts to be a sharp counter programmer when rivals have establishedbeachheads. Their argument is there are plenty of Alabama fans in town, too, beyond just alums. Successful teams tend to draw fans from all over.
680/The Fan inthe past has aired Auburn University Tigers and University of Florida Gatorsfootball games without any obvious ill effect to their ratings. (In fact, they are the top sports talk station in town right now by a wide margin.)
Eli Gold will hostplay-by-play, with color provided by former Crimson Tide assistant coach PhilSavage. The station will periodically carry Nick Saban’s CoachesShow as well.
“Teaming upwith such a storied and successful college football program along with CoachSaban, was a natural fit for us,” said Terry Foxx, the programdirector in a press release. (I will update when I talk to him by phone.)“We are proud to expand our lineup of premier sports properties, and lookforward to showcasing Crimson Tide football to the legion of fans in Atlanta.”
“ We havetremendous support in the greater Atlanta area and we currently have 19 playersfrom Georgia, including 14 from within an hour of the city," said Saban inthe release. " Atlanta is the city in the South and it is just three hoursfrom Tuscaloosa, so this is a great fit. We look forward to the beginning of agreat partnership with 92.9 starting this fall with the season-opener inAtlanta against Virginia Tech the Georgia Dome.”

Joy, do you remember Amy, the lovely and talented lyvtyd? She is one of thousands of Bama alums and fans in the metro-Atlanta area who will be frequent listeners. Dawgs will just have to get over it.

Thanks, this is great news for Atlanta Bama fans. There used to be an AM station toward Rome that I could get unless it was dark and they turned town the wattage. You're right, the dawgs are howling about it.
