šŸˆ 5 Thoughts - Bama vs. Florida (Already?!)

By Richard Cirminiello

You want to really bring the SEC-hater in your life to a boiling point? Tell him that it’s now possible we’ll see a repeat of the SEC championship game in Pasadena a month later.

It may not be likely and there’s a long way to go, but what happens if Florida and Alabama remain unbeaten all the way to Atlanta on Dec. 5? Both knocked down significant road hurdles on Saturday, the Gators at LSU and the Tide at Ole Miss. And ā€˜Bama moved up to No. 2 in the latest AP Poll, a signal that voters are starting to form an opinion on the two best teams in the country. Sure, a rematch will require some help, but are you convinced that Texas is going to win the next eight games? How about Iowa or the winner of Thursday night’s Big East showdown between South Florida and Cincinnati? Boise State? I love you, blue, but when a team’s only win over a ranked opponent happens before Labor Day, I’m going to struggle with it playing for a national championship.

There are only nine unbeatens left in the country, raising the likelihood that there’ll be a bunch of one-loss teams vying in December for a Rose Bowl berth. If 12-1 Alabama or 12-1 Florida is in the mix, and has only lost to the No. 1 (or No. 2) team in the country, doesn’t that make for a pretty compelling resume? Just a little something to get you fired up between now and the Week 7 slate of games.

And here is what I said on that subject 1 week ago in another thread:

based on how Oregon has looked since the 1st game I'd say we would meet them in the semi-finals. And probably Florida Texas in the other Semi-final.

The conf. championship winners would make more sense in that with this scenario we could have to play florida in the SECCG and the Nation Championship as well.

Just might do that anyway. If it is a foregone conclussion that they are the two best teams at the end of the year, and they play the SECCG with the crew of refs that were in Athens this past weekend, the BCS might like to see them play again in Pasadena with a REAL crew of refs. And if it is Bama winning the SECCG like LSU beat UGA, then you can take it to the bank.

Trouble I see with this scenerio is that you could end up with a National Champion that lost the SEC championship and you would need a two out of three to sort that out. IMO, the loser of the SECCG should not play for the National Championship.

That would hold true only if that was Bama. If it was Florida and Tebow the Great, it would be the greatest thing in the history of CFB. Like coming back from losing to Ole Miss.

I hear you from the media standpoint, give him two shots but I don't think it is right and wouldn't want a second shot at the title if we lost the SECCG fair up and not because of poor officials (ie UGA excessive celebration penalty). On the other hand, I would be ready for a rematch if say we won the game because Tebow was out with a concussion and we would forever see an * (Tebow hurt)

Never happen. You wont ever see them play back to back games after the SECCG. Never. Maybe if we were like these schools that didnt have a conference championship game, but that is the only way it would happen.

What if UGA had gone 11-1 last year and then beat Bama in the SECCG? Both are 12-1, obviously the two best teams in the country, and their only losses are to each other.

Of course they would never give Bama that shot so let me put it this way.

What if Ole Miss had gone 11-1 last year and then beat UF in the SECCG? Both are 12-1, obviously the two best teams in the country, and their only losses are to each other.

You think UF wouldn't have gotten that shot?

I still dont think it would happen. I mean, Auburn went undefeated in the SEC and still didn't play for the title. Just because we are in the SEC don't mean were a given to the National Title game. Especially a repeat of a game that has already been seen. Just my opinion, you right though. Never say never, but it has never happened before and I don't think it will be happening anytime soon. :)
