1.) Mack Brown,Texas– That’s right Mack Brown is not only #1, but head and shoulders above every other coach outside of Mark Richt. How in the world do you go 12-13 over the 2 seasons at the University of Texas? Texas signs plenty of 4 & 5-star talent during the first week of February on a yearly basis. Manny Diaz and a weak schedule will save Brown this year. Worst case scenario Texas should go 10-2, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Mike Gundy and Bill Snyder take his man-hood again. If that happens, Brown should be asked to leave in the locker room before the post-game press conference.

2.) Mark Richt, Georgia – Richt has made a living out of signing top-10 recruiting classes and allowing less talented teams to beat his. Richt and Georgia had a great schedule last year and they avoid playing Alabama, LSU and Arkansas for the second consecutive year. I expect Richt to lose to Mizzou or the Ol’ Ball Coach early in the season. If Muschamp can get the defense playing at an elite level by late September, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Gators knock off the Bulldogs at the cocktail party in Jacksonville, FL. Last year, three out of the four loses came from teams with less talent than Georgia:Boise State, South Carolina and MichiganState. More proof that Richt is in over his head and living off a great two-year schedule. Steve Spurrier would win a national championship in Athens,GA.

3.) Gene Chizik, Auburn – Yes Mean Gene won a National title with Cam Newton, the best college football player in the history of the game, but that’s doesn’t prove he’s a really good head coach. Chizik will continue to win around 8 games per year, and when your measuring stick in-state is Nick Saban – you don’t have a prayer of hanging around long. Brian VanGorder was a great hire and I think Auburn’s defense is outstanding, but between the headsets and on offense they’ll struggle. Who’s playing quarterback again? After Chizik wins 7-8 this year and Saban runs the 2012 Auburn team out of Bryant-Denny Thanksgiving weekend Chizik’s seat will be warm heading into the 2013 season.

4.) Jimbo Fisher, FloridaState– Prove it to me, because now is the time. FSU plays in a weak conference, and Fisher should have dominated last year. They’re loaded on defense and have plenty of talent up and down the roster. Anything less than 10-2 is unacceptable, and FSU should win 11 regular season games. The Saban rotĆ©gĆ© factor is wearing off fast. ACC title and BCS bowl game or he’s not the right guy.

5.) Any coach at UCLA, Texas A&M, Arizona State? Ok maybe not after the ups and downs the three programs have had we’ll see how the new guys do.

Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech – Man that hurt to type that. Especially considering how much I admire Tuberville for what he accomplished at Ole Miss andAuburn. Both programs (different circumstances) we’re dumpster fires when he took over. I expected him to take what Mike Leach had teed up and win more ballgames. More proof that its not just the coach and the school, its all about the right fit. Either Mike Leach is even better than I thought (and I think he’s a top-15 coach) or Tuberville needs to right the ship and ding some teams this year.

There's no love lost here for Tubs, but I have to give him his due.

When he's got the right personnel in place he isn't a bad coach.

The last two seasons at TTU haven't been good by any means at all. Is that enough to say he's overrated? His system, as compared to the one Leach ran at TTU, aren't comparable in the least.

Hot seat? Sure, I'd put him there in his third year. But overrated?

Mack Brown is a no-brainer if you ask me, no other coach has under-performed with the exception of possibly Stoops. Brown has made it to the MNC game twice and is 1-1. His record year in and year out is admirable, the last two have been some road bumps, but the previous years have given him some extra time.

Stoops can make it to the big games, but then somehow can't pull off the big win > only reason I'd put him on the list.

Richt probably because he can't seem to beat a solid team and his inability to hold on to recruits. At the rate UGA is going the last few days/weeks - they won't have enough players to start @ Mizzou... I agree, any other good coach would have had a few MNC's by now with GA talent.

Not sure what to think about the others. I'm not sold on Chizik/Fisher either way. Chizik's has what appears to be good/solid O and D coaches, so that means my expectation for Auburn increases.

TAMU, I'm really mixed on, they are the little sister in the state of Texas (think Auburn). They have all the potential in the world, but just can't deliver - I think they have internal power struggles between administration and alumni's.

UCLA, I've heard is all about funding...they won't pay coaches to live in LA. They should be competing with USC for the south or whatever there divisions are.

While Les is an absolute goofball, his statistics don't lie. Guy is a pretty good coach, and I think some of his bafoonery is him playing up to what the media paints him to be.

I give Chizik 2 more maybe 3 years. I'll be honest, I was not happy to see Van Gorder go there. I really respect what that guy can do. (Awesome DC, IMO). Even still, AU doesn't win in the next 2 years, I don't think Chizik makes it. Like the blogger said, If Bama runs AU out on a rail this year, Chizik's seat gets warm and if it is done again in 2013, I don't know if he can withstand the heat.

but it is Miss St., not exactly a top tier team like most of the choices so far

True, MSU isn't top tier, but he hasn't beaten anyone inside the division not named Ole Miss. I would put Mullen on this list and take Tuberville off of it. Agree with comments about him, good coach and childish too.

I agree with Chizik on the list and might even place him higher than Richt or Brown. What has Chizik done without the best player money can buy? 5-19 at Iowa State and 16-10 at the Barn. Is a record of 21-29 minus the Cam year the record of a really good coach? It will be interesting to see if he can survive 2-3 years of 7-9 win seasons; I think not!!

i would add Dan Mullen to the list, I think everyone thought he was something but he hasn't beat anyone really has he

In the SEC, no wins over any of the top tier. But, considering the stories with the B1G, Delany, and more specifically Rich Rod, the 54-14 ass-kicking he put on Michigan was a W any SEC fan should be proud of. I never mind rooting for a team playing against Ole Miss and he's beaten them twice. And I'll gladly admit I loved the W over Georgia in 2010 in a 9-4 season for the Bulldogs.

Most importantly, let's not forget: it is Mississippi State.

Mullen isn't exactly on the hot seat yet, but this year he definitely needs to beat someone in the west besides ole miss. If they don't move up a notch he will start getting some heat.

Chiz will have a tough time winning this year regardless of teh qb he goes with. Can't even use the game manager concept because his RB are all on the smallish sie.

I would say Frank Beamer should be in the discussion, no doubt that Lane Kiffin should....

Really? I admit I hate his attitude but he's accomplished a lot at USC the last couple of years, especially considering they were on a bowl-ban both of those seasons. This year will be his real test. Everyone's expecting them to make a title run so we'll see.

I can't say I agree with this. He's had the luxury of coaching the sophomores and freshmen Carroll recruited his last two years there. The certainly kept more players with the bowl ban than Penn State has, but the defining seasons on just how well he's going to do are 2013 and 2014...watching the defense this year is going to be a small indicator if they get a few injuries here and there.

Don't forget, the signing class of 2011 was the first one dealing with restrictions.

Alright, you have a point. I still can't help but kind of admire the guy since he has at least kept the team together during those two years. This year will be his first real test, and the next two, as you said, are what will really be important.
