šŸˆ #5 GymTiders extend winning streak to 108 in a row versus Auburn.

No. 7 Gymnastics Faces Fourth Top-10 Team in Row Friday with No. 5 Georgia

The schedule doesn't get any easier for the No. 7 Alabama gymnastics team going into its fifth meet of the season. The Crimson Tide faces its fourth consecutive top-10 showdown Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum when archrival Georgia, ranked fifth in this week's standings, comes calling. This latest edition of Alabama vs. Georgia - long the best rivalry in gymnastics and among the best rivalries in all of collegiate athletics - is being billed as the "Battle of Champions" by UA head coach Sarah Patterson."We've won six national championships and Georgia has won 10, and going all the way back to the 1980s, we've known that if we want to win an NCAA Championship, we're going to have to go through them and if they want to win one, they have to get through us. Through all the years, that really hasn't changed."The rivalry is also one of the reasons that Patterson chose to center this year's alumni weekend around Friday's meet."We have about 70 alumni coming back and I chose this weekend because I knew it would mean a lot to them to come back and see this meet and be a part rivalry again," Patterson said.Among the Tide alumni slated to return are NCAA all-around champions Penney Hauschild Buxton, Dee Foster Worley and Meredith Willard Luber. Other NCAA champions scheduled to be on hand Friday include Morgan Dennis, Dana Dobransky Duckworth, Ashley Miles, Geralen Stack-Eaton and Kim Kelly Warren.Alabama comes into this latest competition sporting a 9-1-0 record in its last ten meetings with Georgia. The lone loss during that stretch came last season in Athens, when the Bulldogs won 197.500-196.950 in early February. In addition to taking on the nation's top teams, Alabama has also been facing off against the best individual gymnasts in the nation to open this season. After taking on the NCAA's No. 1 ranked all-arounders - Arkansas' Katherine Grable and LSU's Rheagan Courville - over the last two weeks, the Tide faces Georgia's Lindsey Cheek, who is ranked No. 1 on the uneven bars, this Friday.Alabama comes into its fifth meet of 2014 led by a mixture of veterans and rookies. Senior All-American Sarah DeMeo and freshman Katie Bailey have gone in the all-around all four meets this season, while senior All-American Kim Jacob has gone all-around in three of four meets and has won six individual titles along the way.Last week, at LSU, DeMeo, Jacob and senior All-American Diandra Milliner accounted for nearly half the Tide's routines with 11 while freshmen Bailey, Amanda Jetter, Aja Sims and Keely McNeer accounted for nine more, meaning the junior and sophomore classes picked up the remaining four."I think this year's freshmen have come in a lot like our seniors did in 2011," Patterson said. "We've had to rely on them for a lot of routines and for the most part they've come through. I think those seniors see a lot of themselves in this year's freshmen and are doing everything they can to help them come along."

bamaraider With the alumni coming back tonight, plus it's simply against UGA, the atmosphere in Coleman tonight? Geez...wish I could be there!!!

You know I went to Gymnastics meet back in like 2011 or so. Never realized how much they really put into it. Like when I went there, there were fireworks for pre-game, and on the jumbo tron, it wasn't much different than the hype videos for all of the other sporting events, but it was. It was weird, but good (guess that's the best I can describe it). The atmosphere is really fun though. I'm not really that big on gymnastics honestly, but I'd go back in a heart beat.

It's described as a "comeback," which I'd say is a term used rather loosely considering UGA fell twice on the beam. However...

Time to smash the barners

The Medalist Club, the Alabama gymnastics team's booster club, is sponsoring a free bus that will travel to the Crimson Tide's meet at Auburn this Friday. The bus will leave from the Coleman Coliseum parking lot at 2 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 14) and will travel through Birmingham to pick up those in the area with reserved seats at the Grove (Hwy 150 and I-459). The bus is slated to arrive at Auburn by 5:30 p.m. Those riding the bus will also receive free tickets which will be distributed at the arena and the bus will return immediately following the meet.

Auburn has been getting better and better since they hired Jeff Graba back in 2010. It very well could be a tough meet.

Setting that aside for a second...think about where you were back in January of 1980. That's when this winning streak started...

Think about that...tomorrow, it'll be

34 years, 27 days.

Or, if you prefer, 12,446 days...

W. Gymnastics. No. 5 Gymnastics Beats No. 12 Auburn, 197.500-197.100

The No. 5 ranked Alabama gymnastics team pulled out a close win over No. 12 Auburn Friday night in Auburn Arena with a score of 197.500-197.100 in front of 7,123 fans, the second largest gymnastics crowd in Auburn Arena.

The Auburn gymnastics team did everything it could with visiting Alabama in the house. But the Crimson Tide turned its best performance of the season and pulled away at the end to get another big win in a season where Alabama is getting better each meet.

In front of a loud and raucous Auburn Arena crowd, the No. 5 Crimson Tide posted its highest team score of the season for the second meet in a row, taking down the No. 12 Tigers in the process.

ā€œ[Coach] Sarah [Patterson] told us before the meet started that it would probably come down to the last routine, so we expected it, going in,ā€ senior Sarah DeMeo said. ā€œWe’re going to give it our all. That’s what we did. Each event, we built on it and that’s what helped us.ā€

Patterson didn’t hold back on Friday in regards to her lineup. She put DeMeo and fellow senior Kim Jacob and freshman Katie Bailey all on the all-around. DeMeo responded by winning the all-around with a career-high 39.5.

Alabama’s 197.5 tied its season-high from last week’s meet against Georgia.

ā€œThe performance was better,ā€ Patterson said. ā€œI thought we were better on bars, our routines were. I’m not talking scores, I’m talking performance. All the things that we worked on this past week in the gym, the ladies did it.ā€

The Crimson Tide faced some adversity right off the bat. Freshman Aja Sims couldn’t get up on one of her handstands on uneven bars, but the team finished strong behind her.

Sims bounced back with a 9.875 on floor and 9.925 on beam.

ā€œWhen she made that mistake on bars I went over to her and I said, ā€˜they got your back,ā€™ā€ Patterson said. ā€œā€˜They’re gonna do it and you don’t even think about it and move on to the next event. You can step up first on floor and get us started,’ and that’s what she did. I think they’re seeing how things transpire and how the teamwork is so important.ā€

Alabama also had the help of some of its own fans behind it. The 7,123 attendance was the second-best for a gymnastics meet in Auburn Arena’s history. Part of that was a small, yet vocal Alabama section that bussed down courtesy of the UA gymnastics booster club.

ā€œI loved the energy. It’s so loud,ā€ Sims said. ā€œEven though we’re not at home, we still had a lot of good people from home that could cheer us on.ā€

The meet ended in traumatic fashion. On the last routine of the night, Auburn’s Bri Guy rolled her ankle taking off for a tumbling pass and hit her head as she came down. The arena went silent, and Guy stayed down for a few minutes before sitting up and being taken off on a stretcher, ending the meet.

It started with teams trading the smallest lead possible.

The Tigers took a .025 lead after the first rotation, with just sophomore Amanda Jetter cracking the 9.9 mark on uneven bars. On the next rotation, the Tigers’ first four bar routines set or tied career-highs for their gymnasts, but Alabama countered by tying its season-high score on vault to take the .025 lead back for itself.

Alabama extended its lead in the third rotation to give it some breathing room. Jacob led the way with a 9.95 and DeMeo was right behind her with a 9.925. Every gymnast scored at least a 9.8. The Crimson Tide closed with a season-high 49.325.

Alabama will head to Oklahoma City next week for a quad meet with Oklahoma, Michigan and West Virginia.<iframe style="display: none;" allowtransparency="true" id="rufous-sandbox" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>

Great win last night. Sure the intensity was high last night. Pretty good that they're starting to put up their best performances late in the season like this. Hopefully it'll carry on into the OKC. (Yes, I know nothing about Gymnastics)
