Looking at the splits over the 8 games this season, I noticed a trend. Bama has set the tone for the game in the 3rd quarter. Really, the second half has been incredible, but most of the points and yards piled on in the 4th are by 2nd and 3rd string players running between the tackles.
BUT, those young guys have had success in the 4th because the opposition was pounded into submission during the 3rd quarter. Just breaking down the points and total yards in the 3rd quarter shows a dominating Crimson Tide.
Alabama 3rd quarter
Yards -- 1133
Average -- 141.6 yards per 3rd quarter
Points -- 107 (15td/1fg)
Average -- 13.3 points per 3rd quarter
Opposition 3rd quarter
Yards -- 338
Average -- 42.2 yards per
Points -- 14
Average -- 1.7 points per
When you consider that Kent State scored 7 points because of an interception returned inside the 5, it's that much more impressive. Bama's defense has only allowed 1 sustained TD drive in the 3rd quarter this season through 8 games. If there is a knockout round for Alabama, it's the 3rd quarter.
