🏈 2016-'17 Playoff teams announced. Bama, Clemson, OSU, and UW

The Ohio Nut Jobs got picked over Washington, and they sat out Saturday. Usually that means you get left out. Penn State won and gets no respect. What happened to the pundits saying if you can't win your conference you don't deserve to be in the playoffs. They just want us to play Clemson in the NCG

Let me say from the start, I AM NOT a fan of Ohio State but IMO, they deserved to be in the top 4.

They beat Oklahoma in Norman. They beat Wisconsin in Madison. They beat a very good Michigan team in double overtime in Columbus. Yes, they lost to Penn St. at Penn St. They ran the table in every game but one. Meyer has made the Bucks into the mold of an SEC team with speed, skill and athlete. Like them or not, he Harbaugh and Franlin have made the Big 10 relevant again.

#1 Pundits dont decide the Playoffs...

#2 Penn State lost two games... a 2-loss Penn State wasn't jumping a one-loss OSU.

The only thing sillier than last week's specious arguments about the University of Alabama's "resume" for the College Football Playoff would be wasting further time rehashing them.

The Crimson Tide is in, has the No. 1 seed and will be playing in Atlanta. Any other measure of this team is still to be determined. As Nick Saban, a football expert of some note, says, "This team's legacy is still to be determined."

Alabama's fate was never in doubt on Sunday. In fact, the CFP Selection Committee had no hard decisions to make after Washington and Clemson won their respective conferences. The only issue was whether Ohio State or Penn State would receive the Big Ten spot in the field, as the committee has historically been about spreading things around in its brief existence.

I understand the arguments about Penn State having a head-to-head win and a conference championship. I also think Ohio State was the better team, despite the "Scoreboard!" argument. There are a lot of Alabama fans on the Penn State side of the "controversy," which is fascinating for this reason.

If it had not been for the Arkansas Overtime Miracle against Ole Miss in 2015, the fourth-and-25 lateral that gave the Razorbacks an improbable win, then the test case for this scenario would not have been this Ohio State-Penn State this year, it would have been Alabama-Ole Miss last year. The similarities are absolutely striking, if not identical. Alabama would have been a one-loss team with a strong resume and an advantage in the "eye test." Ole Miss would have been playing in Atlanta (in a rematch against Florida) but also carrying a blowout league loss (a regular-season defeat by the Gators) and a non-conference loss to Memphis. Would the majority of Alabama fans have deferred to the SEC title and said that Ole Miss (had they beaten Florida) deserved to go? Would the committee have treated Alabama with the same deference it showed to the Buckeyes, as both are "national brands?" We will never know, but it would have been interesting to ponder. Personally, I'd have said Alabama deserved the bid last year, which is why I can't argue against Ohio State this year. (Michigan had no real argument at the end, probably less of one than Oklahoma had in the end.)

It's the nature of all college football fans to expect a conspiracy lurking around the corner. SEC fans are no exception. But nothing of the sort emerged this season or in the three years of CFP existence. It was fun to see Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, a conference-champion absolutist when his great fear was multiple SEC teams leapfrogging a mediocre Big Ten champ. His league has improved, and credit to him for that, but his principles appear to have changed along with it.

Washington is an intriguing opponent for Alabama. The Crimson Tide has never faced a Chris Petersen-coached team, but his reputation is impeccable and his record with a month to prepare is strong (as is Saban's.) UA hasn't met the Huskies since Ray Perkins' final game as coach in 1986 and it's just the kind of intersectional matchup that college football needs. The initial public reaction is that Alabama will coast to a win, but a better attitude might be "wait and see." Just as it was with the playoff selections, which turned out as well as anyone could have expected.
