They took the unconventional route to Alabama. One's from Minnesota and the other from Iowa, but they're impressing a former Alabama lineman.
J.C. Hassenauer and Ross Pierschbacherwere the two young linemen Austin Shepherdlisted when asked who'll step in this season. Alabama lost three starters ― right tackle Shepherd, left guard Arie Kouandjio and right guard Leon Brown ― after the 2014 season.
Another familiar name is the third to watch this fall, Shepherd said the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.
"I've watched them come in as a pup and they've already grown up so much," Shepherd said. "I can't wait to see what Cam Robinson does. Obviously he started last year, but he has so much more in him. He was a freshman and now he's going to mature a little more. I just can't wait see where he goes with that."
Robinson started all 14 games at left tackle while fighting through some midseason injuries. Hassenauer, the No. 1 center in the 2014 class according to 247Sports, lost his redshirt in the Texas A&M game when he entered at center. He was third on the depth chart at center behind returning starter Ryan Kelly and Bradley Bozeman.
Pierschbacher was the No. 6 tackle nationally when he came from Cedar Falls, Iowa. Listed as Robinson's backup on the left side, there will be an opening at right tackle with Shepherd's graduation. He redshirted last season.
Shepherd says you should keep an eye on Hassenauer and Pierschbacher this spring and fall.
"Just their work ethic," Shepherd said. "They're kinda like me. They weren't huge names coming in so they have a great work ethic. They're always in there doing extra. I watched film with them multiple times last year ― just trying to teach them what I learned and just stuff to pick up watching film."
