🏈 1st Play on Offense

Just thinking how I would like to see us go play action on the first play of the game and try to get a deep ball. If you were the play caller what play would you like to see us run the 1st play of the game?

The last game, our first play from scrimmage was Trent running for just under 20 yards.

Our second play was a small pass to Trent he took for just over 20 yards, fumbled...a few plays later we missed a FG.

My point?

I don't think it'll matter. I would like to see AJ get a few completions early on so I'd rather not start with any routes over 15-18 yards. No need to throw deep and him try to find rhythm all night.

AJ being comfortable regardless of the play is indeed important. Avoiding a three and out is also big. Anything that gets 6 plus yards will make me happy.

I'm with Terry on this one. I normally love the idea of coming out firing like that, especially in a big game such as this one. I think it loosens the team up, specifically the QB, and it tends to get the defense on it's heals.

HOWEVER, I don't think we really have a WR on this team currently where we can just tell him to go deep and we're just going to throw it up to him and him come down with it. Heck, Kenny Bell is probably the closest thing to that type of WR that we have. I think AJ needs to get in some sort of rhythm before we start taking shots down field.

Heck, I wouldn't mind a little 4 yard run from Trent, and then let us set something up with our TE's. If there is one area that I think we can exploit them at, it would be their LB's against our TE's. It's enough for their LB's to have to keep an eye on Trent, but then you throw in some quick hitters to Smelley or Williams...that's a lot to have to deal with.

Also, this is just a thought, and maybe it belongs in a different thread, but I really don't think Mathieu's coverage skills are the best. Before anyone freaks out, I know he's a really good player...but his coverage skills are NOT what make him the player he is. His ball skills are unreal, but where he is dangerous is when we have the ball in our hands and he finds a way to poke it out or strip it...and then once he gets the ball in his hands he's the best in the nation.

By no means am I saying that Matthieu is a bad player...just saying that IF we decide to go down field, I'd like to get their Safeties thinking about other things (Trent or the TE's) ,and I'd prefer it to be against Matthieu, and NOT Claiborne.

Darby up the middle.

Alot will depend on field position I believe. Poor return means conservative call whereas a solid return out to the 35-40yd line means the entire playbook is open. I agree that a few easy completions to get AJ in a rhythm early should be key. Seeing Trent rip off a long run would be nice too!!

i really would like to see us be able to pound the ball on them which i think is more likely than the last game given the health and vitality of our O-lline being restored.

also, i'm excited to see how much of a part the AJ-Smelley connection may play in the game.

overall, i'm just happy the men in Crimson are playing for another one. i'm just beside myself.

Yep, I hope Smelley and Williams have banner nights. I really think their play may be more important than that of Hanks and Maze.
