The women's cross country team finished third in the South Regional. The top two teams advance to nationals. The Tide was not selected to compete at nationals as an at-large team. This is the highest finish I remember the women having. The high finish at the regional after a lower finish at SEC's tells me much about their coaching philosophy, demonstrating a focus on championship racing which will come in handy if and when they can build the program to a national contender. Secondly, a knowledge of the sport of distance racing which the school has, quite honestly, never had. Congrats to the Tide Women's Cross Country team.

Florida and Florida St. (second nationally a couple of years ago) have done well recently, so to be in the mix with them (beating UF even) is encouraging. Rebeccah Stover is from my neck of the woods, and Claire Turner is as well - her coach is good friend and we ran on a team together once upon a time. Not encouraged on the men's side, but it's a different game with a different dynamic due to track and the number of scholarships. A friend of mine is coaching Tennessee's distance now, so as much as I hate it I was happy for him (let's put it that way). The women finishing ahead of Ole Miss is big for me for several reasons I won't get into, but Ole Miss had a great year recruiting and I thought they'd be much, much higher.
