🏈 With scheduling on the SEC agenda in Destin, here's some history you may not know about Bama, Bryant

This was back in the days when schools made their own schedules (conference and non-conference) and Coach Bryant scheduled one more conference game than other schools. If everyone had one loss, Bama would win the championship by having the extra win. (Of course, Alabama hardly ever needed the extra game in those days.)

But at the SEC spring meeting, a certain school in this state that begins with 'A' and isn't The University of Alabama thought it wasn't fair. So the SEC ruled that the Alabama-Ole Miss game the next year would not count as a conference game, even though both teams were charter members of the SEC. Adding to the irony, when Georgia Tech got out of the league, a certain school in this state that begins with 'A' and isn't The University of Alabama was still playing Tech and didn't have enough conference games. The SEC decided to delegate a non-conference game as an SEC game. But did they designate Georgia Tech? No. They picked some team like Southern Miss.

In the fifties the state legislature wouldn't let Ole Miss and MSU play against schools that used black players. This left Ole Miss with only five confernece games (six being needed). The conference leaders, in their wisdom, designated Arkansas as their conference game. That led to some interesting Johnny Vaught versus Frank Broyles match ups.
