TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama’s offense and defense have led the discussion so far during the Crimson Tide’s spring practice, whether it’s been position battles, experiments or injuries.

But very little has been mentioned about special teams.

Well, that changed Tuesday when head coach Nick Saban was asked about the kicking game and whether or not he’s thought about once again employing a 2-kicker system this fall.

ā€œYeah, I think about it. A lot, actually,ā€ Saban said after Tuesday’s spring practice. ā€œBut we’ve only had kicking one day so far in the four days that we’ve practiced. It was very windy when we did it, but I was encouraged by the improvement that we made.ā€

The biggest question for UA’s special teams will be which players replace JK Scott and Andy Pappanastos at punter and placekicker, respectively. A scholarship punter is already on campus in early enrollee Skyler DeLong, who will likely take over the position.

Saban also mentioned having new holders with Scott’s departure, but sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has experience holding and it will be up to Saban and new special teams coach Jeff Banks to decide whether the potential starter does that in 2018.

Placekicker Joseph Bulovas is also back after redshirting a season ago. As the lone scholarship kicker on campus this spring, Bulovas has an opportunity to showcase why he deserves the job as Alabama’s starter after he didn’t see the field at all as a freshman.

ā€œWe certainly have a lot of confidence in Joseph, and we think that he has a lot of talent,ā€ Saban said. ā€œWe’re just working on the consistency level to get him to where he wants to be and where we’d like for him to be.ā€

Bulovas arrived at Alabama as the nation’s No. 6 kicker in 2017, per the 247Sports Composite. But Pappanastos beat out the first-year kicker to handle the Tide’s short field goals. Scott, who was a placekicker in high school, jogged onto the field for long attempts.

The Mandeville, La., native will have the competition to himself this spring, but former Temple kicker Austin Jones will arrive on campus as a walk-on once the semester ends to try to win the starting kicker job this offseason. Jones was 50-of-67 on field goal attempts at Temple with a long of 47 yards. In 2016, he set a school record of 19 straight made field goals.

Could Alabama elect to implement a 2-kicker system once again? It’s possible. But the second kicker hasn’t even enrolled yet, leaving the offseason question as exactly that for now.

ā€œWe will evaluate all the kickers that we have in the program, and we do have some coming into the program, as well,ā€ Saban said. ā€œAnd we’re going to do like we do at every other position and play the player who we think gives us the best chance to be successful at that position, and it’ll be no different when it comes to kicking.

ā€œWhether it’s kicking field goals or kicking off or if we have to short field goal/long field goal or whatever.ā€

Alabama will return to practice Thursday, March 29, before a 4-day break for Easter.

for me, i like the idea of having a qb be the holder. AJ did it when Greg was the qb. having a qb as the holder just makes sense, to me. they obviously have good hands to handle the ball coming to them. as well, if they have to get up and scramble, they're in a better position to throw a pass if it comes down to that.

now, if they have another guy on the team practice this, and possibly throwing a pass under duress, then i'm ok with that, too. but it needs to be someone who can handle a snap and have the mindset to get up and either run or throw a pass if needed.

I would like a holder in the mold of Sunseri. Good speed and tackler. He was our holder up until he got hurt his JR year. I can't help but think, had he been in the game, the kick 6 would have not happened, or would have been less likely to happen.

I understand the mindset of having a QB for fake FG/PAT's, but I like the idea of having a defensive guy that is fast and used to tackling that might have played QB in high school...........there again, I don't make 7 million a year to make those decisions, and CNS has never consulted me on anything.

Wait, what? When in the world was Vinnie Sunseri the holder? AJ was the holder from 2010-2013.

Some pros and cons of who is the holder:

QB holder
Pros - good hands, knows what to do with the ball if it's a bad snap
Cons - only gets to work on holding during kicking-specific periods in practice

Punter holder
Pros - gets to work on it ALL practice. While the rest of the team is doing position or team drills, the kickers are working on technique. That means all aspects of the kicking game.
Cons - Punters aren't the most athletic of the players. If they have to throw the ball, there's a good chance it won't be a completion to their team member.
