Marshall could have gotten his point across by NOT charging the refs and acting like an ass!! I believe in standing up for your players but you also have to remember who you represent and what you have instilled in your players about their expressing emotion in a positive way.
I always told my players that you represent more than just yourself and that you were to act accordingly. You represent your school, your community, your team, your coach, and most importantly, your family. Don't ever do anything to embarrass either one!! I always said that IF anyone ever showed their ass or displeasure, it would be me. I used to immediately request a TO and then express my displeasure with the flow or calls going against my team. I would occasionally slam my clipboard down on the floor or my marker.
In baseball, if I didn't like the strike zone, I'd call time and take a mound visit. I would purposely turn my back to the plate while I talked to my pitcher and catcher. When the plate umpire started to the mound to break it up, I would ask my catcher what was wrong or where the pitches missed. When the umpire got there, I would ask if the plate was still 17" across and the strike zone still from the knees to the letters. after he answered yes, I would say, "well how about calling it that way and stop squeezing my pitcher!" I would then walk off before he could respond.
